COLUMBUS, Ohio The No. 17/18 Ohio State men’s lacrosse team moved to 3-0 in Great Western Lacrosse League play with a 16-5 victory over Air Force Sunday in Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in front of 1,011 fans. The Buckeyes, now 7-3 this year, were led by junior Joel Dalgarno (3g, 3a) and senior Kevin Buchanan (1g, 5a) with six points each. Ohio State led the Falcons (2-5, 0-1 GWLL), 5-1, after the first quarter and carried a 13-2 lead into halftime.
Prior to the game, the 11 members of the Buckeye senior class were honored. The class includes Buchanan, Mat Ballay, Charlie Billingsley, Matt Cornell, Bill Curry, Chris Friel, Josh Funk, Steve McKinlay, Ricky Pages, Peter Schell and Stefan Schroder.
After Air Force opened the scoring on a goal by Griffin Nevitt 43 seconds into the game, Ohio State went on an 11-goal run. Doug Ruhnke scored for the Buckeyes at 13:25 before sophomore Ryan Lowe found junior Peet Poillon at 12:12. Longstick sophomore Conor Anderson followed with his first career goal, scoring on a backhanded after Buchanan found him just outside the crease. Buchanan set up the next goal, as Mario Ventiquattro scored his first of three goals at 7:49. Buchanan scored a goal of his own at 6:43.
The Buckeyes outscored the Falcons, 8-1, in the second quarter. Sophomore James Green opened the scoring at 12:55 with an unassisted goal. Dalgarno had a hand in the next five goals, with three goals and two assists. He set up Ventiquattro for a man-up goal at 11:53 and then scored the next three in just over three minutes, scoring man-up at 11:53 and 9:53 around a goal at even strength at 11:16. Dalgarno closed out his streak when he set up senior Josh Funk for a goal at 6:07. Buchanan assisted on the last two goals by Dalgarno. Air Force stopped the Buckeye run on Nevitt’s goal at 5:34. Ohio State closed out the half with goals by junior Jeff Ryan, assisted by Buchanan, at 4:15 and a man-up score by Poillon, on an assist from Dalgarno, at 3:50.
The teams were able to score just once in the third quarter, as the Falcons’ Jack Parchman converted a man-up chance at the 7:55 mark. Air Force outshot Ohio State in the quarter, 10-7.
The teams combined for five goals in the fourth quarter, with Ohio State scoring three times. Senior Peter Schell found Ventiquattro at 11:22. Air Force scored the next two goals, with David Rose scoring at 9:16 followed by Peter Krasco at 8:34 with an assist by Nevitt. Freshman Mike Pires scored from the ground at 7:45 before Schell scored unassisted, beating a number of defenders, at 2:31.
For the third-consecutive game, three goalies saw time in the cage for the Buckeyes. Senior Stefan Schroder started and played the first 45 minutes, making 10 saves and allowing three goals. Sophomore Brandon Freeman played 12:57 and allowed two goals, making three saves. Senior Bill Curry played the final 2:03 and stopped the one shot he faced.
The Buckeyes won 20-of-25 faceoffs in the game. Junior Nick Carr was 17-for-22 and had a team-best eight groundballs. Lowe won the three faceoffs he took.
Ohio State outshot Air Force, 38-30. Ohio State had 43 groundballs, with Air Force scooping up 32.
The Buckeyes converted 4-of-8 extra-man chances and held the Falcons to one goal on six opportunities.
The Buckeyes will be back in action with a neutral-site game vs. North Carolina Saturday. The teams will meet at 1 p.m. at Boys’ Latin High School in Baltimore.
Dalgarno has a team-best 24 assists and 45 points on the year. He has back-to-back six-point games after a nine-point outing three games ago. He has 136 points (74g, 62a) in his Buckeye career to rank 12th in program history, one behind 11th-place Dean Curtis (1990-93). He has 62 career assists to rank eighth in the Buckeye record books. Dalgarno extended his scoring streak to 37 games and has at least one point in each of his games as a Buckeye.
Buchanan, who leads the Buckeyes with 24 goals and is second with 42 assists, now has 141 (77g, 64a) points as a Buckeye, ranking eighth in program history and is sixth in career assists. Buchanan is on a 39-game scoring streak (73-60-132), has multiple points in each of his last 22 games and is on an 19-game goal-scoring streak. He has six points in each of his last two games and is averaging 5.5 points a game in the last four games.
The Buckeyes have scored 11 or more goals in each of their last seven games and have double-digit goals in 8-of-10 games this year.
The Buckeye defense has held opponents to eight goals or less in 9-of-10 games this year.
After he was held scoreless in the season opener, Ryan has at least one goal in each of the last eight nine. His streak of multiple-point games was ended at eight.
Poillon has multiple goals and points in all but one game this season.
Schell had his first points of the season with a goal and an assist.
Ventiquattro had his second hat trick of the season and has eight goals in the last three games combined.
Pires has a goal in each of the last three games. Ruhnke is on a four-game (2g, 3a) scoring streak.
