Box Score

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s lacrosse team lost to Great Western Lacrosse League opponent Notre Dame, 16-5, Friday night in Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in front of a stadium-record 2,112 fans. The Buckeyes fall to 5-7 on the year and 2-2 in conference play, while the Irish end the regular season 7-4 and close out league action 3-2.

Ohio State returns to action at noon Sunday when it plays host to GWLL foe Fairfield at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. The Buckeye senior class will be honored in a pregame ceremony.

Notre Dame scored the only four goals of the opening quarter. Pat Walsh scored twice (11:22 and :09), while Matt Malakoff and Alex Wharton added the other goals.

Ben Wolff (Jr., Owings Mills, Md./Calvert Hall) got OSU on the board at 12:43 of the second quarter, but UND responded with goals at 11:53 and 9:38 to push its lead to 6-1. The Buckeyes scored twice in 33 seconds to cut the lead to three (6-3), as Craig Nolan (Jr., Plano, Texas/Dallas Jesuit College Prep), scored at 5:33, assisted by Andrew Bender (Jr., Wooster, Ohio/Wooster), and Jason Lutz (So., Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle) tallied at 5:00. The Irish then scored the last two goals of the quarter to move their lead to 8-3 at halftime.

The Irish outscored Ohio State, 4-0, in the third quarter and 8-2 in the second half for the 16-5 win. In the third stanza, Chris Richez scored for UND 59 seconds in, followed by a Jim Morrison goal at 9:11, with Matt Malakoff assisting on both goals. Lucius Polk tallied at 8:33, followed by Michael Podgajny’s second goal of the game at 3:11.

Buckeye Lance Vitt (Sr., Littleton, Colo./Arapahoe) scored 21 seconds into the final quarter before the Irish went on a four-goal run. Podgajny completed his hat trick at 9:10, followed by a Brian Giordano man-up goal at 6:39. John Greaney (at 4:59) and Tyler Krummenacher (at 2:52) closed out the Irish scoring. Jon DeCanio (So., Clifton, Va./Robinson), assisted by John Dauro (Sr., Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side), scored with 1:52 on the clock for the 16-5 final.

Ohio State outshot Notre Dame in the game, 42-33. Three Buckeye goalies combined for seven saves. Mike Rimmer (r-Fr., Melville, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East) started the game and played 41:24, allowing 11 goals and making five saves while taking the loss. Bill Curry (Fr., Wilton, Conn./Wilton) played 13:59 and allowed four goals and had one save and Drew May (r-So., St. Louis, Mo./DeSmet Jesuit) played the final 4:37 and had one save and one goal allowed. Three Notre Dame goalies combined for 20 saves, including 16 by starter and winner Joey Kemp in 45 minutes.

Game Notes
The attendance of 2,112 broke the JOMS men’s lacrosse record of 1,730 set vs. Johns Hopkins April 6, 2002.

Wolff’s goal extended his point-scoring streak to 18, dating back to last season. He is the only Buckeye with at least one point in all 12 games this season and has a goal in all 11 outings.

Lutz extended his goal-scoring streak to four games.

Kyle Olson had his scoring streak ended at nine and his goal streak stopped at seven.

Dauro’s assist was his first point of the season.
