COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s lacrosse team closed out Great Western Lacrosse League play with a 10-8 loss to No. 15-ranked Notre Dame Saturday afternoon in Notre Dame, Ind. The Buckeyes fall to 6-6 on the year and 3-2 in the GWLL, while the Irish improve to 9-4 and 2-2 in league action.

Notre Dame led, 3-1, at the end of the first quarter and 5-3 at halftime. Notre Dame’s Lucius Polk opened the scoring with a goal at 6:18, followed by Craig Nolan’s (Sr., Plano, Texas/Jesuit College Prep) tally for the Buckeyes, assisted by Andrew Bender (Sr., Wooster, Ohio/Wooster), at 4:28. The Irish then went on a four-goal run, with a man-up goal by Matt Karweck at 2:17 of the first and Matt Ryan’s tally with 1:31 left in the quarter. Notre Dame’s Brian Hubschmann opened the second quarter with goals at 12:07 and 5:42. The Buckeyes stopped the Irish run with Jason Lutz’s (Jr., Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle) tally, set up by Bender, at 2:55. Kevin Buchanan (So., Cockeysville, Md./Calvert Hall) scored for the Buckeyes with one minute remaining in the first half.

The Irish opened the third quarter with three-consecutive goals, including Michael Podgajny’s man-up goal 42 seconds into the period. Pat Walsh tallied for the Irish at 9:02 and Hubschmann completed his hat trick at 8:29. Joel Dalgarno (Fr., Port Coquitlam, British Columbia/Western Reserve Academy (Ohio) then set up two Buckeye goals in 49 seconds, with Lutz’s goal at 7:35 and Jason Bloom’s (r-Sr., Coquitlam, British Columbia/Centennial) score at 6:46. Walsh tallied for the Irish at 4:39, making the score 9-5.

The Buckeyes outscored the Irish, 3-1, to close out the game. Josh Wittenberg (Sr., Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) scored back-to-back goals, assisted by Buchanan with 1:12 left in the third quarter and Bender with 11:27 remaining in the fourth. After Walsh scored his third goal of the game for the Irish at 6:08, Justin Doran (Sr. Melville, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East) found Nolan with 2:11 remaining for the 10-8 final.

The Buckeyes outshot the Irish, 42-31, in the game. Buckeye goalie John Bolen (Fr., Potomac, Md./Landon) started and played 58:47, making nine saves and allowing 10 goals. Drew May (St. Louis, Mo./DeSmet Jesuit) played the final 1:13, but did not record a save or goal allowed. Irish goalie Joey Kemp made 12 saves in 60 minutes.

Ohio State was held scoreless on three extra-man chances, while Notre Dame converted 3-of-4 opportunities.

Game Notes
Ohio State wraps up the regular season when it travels to face Army at 7 p.m. Saturday (May 6) in West Point, N.Y. The game will be televised live on ESPNU.

Buchanan has at least one point in every game this season and is on a nine-game goal-scoring streak.

Dalgarno has at least one point in each of his games as a Buckeye. He leads the squad with 22 goals and 35 points this year. He has at least three points in eight of the last nine games.

Lutz is on five-game point and four-game goal scoring streaks. His two goals vs. the Irish matched his career best, set against Robert Morris April 15, 2005.

Bender leads the Buckeyes with a career-best 17 assists this season and is third on the team with a career-best 31 points.
