%^$NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Dave Steckel and Paul Caponigri each scored two goals and added an assist to lead the Ohio State men’s hockey team to a 5-3 victory over Notre Dame at the Joyce Center in Notre Dame, Ind.%^$

%^$The Buckeyes improve to 12-10-1 overall, 9-7-1 in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association. The Irish fall to 5-17-4, 3-11-3 in conference play. The teams will meet again at 7:05 p.m. Saturday at the Joyce Center.%^$

%^$The first period ended tied at one. Notre Dame got on the board first, as Aaron Gill scored on the rebound of a Dan Carlson shot at the 14:21 mark just after Ohio State had killed off an Irish power play. Paul Caponigri tied the game with his seventh goal of the season 16:48 into the period. Jean-Francois Dufour and Dave Steckel added assists on the goal. The helper extended Steckel’s scoring streak to 13 games. The Irish outshot the Buckeyes, 11-4, in the period, as Ohio State killed three ND power-play opportunities.%^$

%^$In the second period, the Buckeyes scored twice in less than a minute to take a two-goal lead. Steckel put in the rebound of a Caponigri shot on the power play to put the Buckeyes up, 2-1, at the 13:46 mark. Doug Andress also assisted on the goal. Scott May then redirected an Eric Skaug shot for his fifth goal of the season at 14:43. R.J. Umberger had the other helper on the goal. OSU goalie Mike Betz stopped all eight Irish shots in the period, as the Buckeyes outshot the Irish, 9-8.%^$

%^$Notre Dame got within one (3-2) with a power-play tally by Dan Carlson 14:36 into the third period. The Buckeyes responded just over a minute later as Caponigri scored his second goal of the night, assisted by Dufour, at the 15:44 mark.%^$

%^$With their net empty, the Irish got within one, 4-3, with a Ryan Dolder goal at the 18:55 mark. Steckel then put Notre Dame away, stealing the puck at the Irish blueline and getting the puck past goalie Tony Zasowski at 19:14 for the final tally of the game.%^$

%^$The Buckeyes killed 6-of-7 Notre Dame power plays, including a 5-on-3 advantage for 1:54, split between the second and third periods. Ohio State was 1-for-3 with the man advantage.%^$
