OXFORD, Ohio – Buckeye junior Rod Pelley scored two power-play goals in the second period to lead the Ohio State men’s hockey team to a 2-1 win over No. 6/8 Miami Friday at Goggin Ice Arena in a Central Collegiate Hockey Association game.

The win gives the Buckeyes a two-game sweep of the RedHawks and extends the team’s winning streak to four games overall. OSU improves to 4-2 on the year and stays unbeaten in the CCHA with a 4-0 ledger. Miami drops to 4-2 on the year and 2-2 in league play.

There was no scoring in the first, as the Buckeyes outshot Miami, 13-9. Each team was scoreless on three power-play chances.

The Buckeyes ended the second period leading, 2-1, on two power-play goals by Pelley (Kitimat, British Columbia). He put OSU on the board with a score at 2:39, assisted by Dan Knapp (Jr., Rochester Hills, Mich.) and Domenic Maiani (Fr., Shelby Township, Mich.). The RedHawks tied the game at the 8:17 mark on Nathan Davis’ goal, but OSU responded just 24 seconds later. With OSU beginning a power play, Maiani won a faceoff straight back to Pelley at the point, who beat Miami goalie Brandon Crawford-West to regain the lead for the Buckeyes (2-1). Miami had eight shots on goal in the period and Ohio State had seven. The Buckeyes were 2-for-3 on the power play in the period and stopped the RedHawks on two chances.

The teams were unable to score in the third, as Miami put 10 shots on net and OSU had nine. Miami was 0-for-4 on the power play in the period and ended the period with a two-man advantage after pulling Crawford-West for the extra attacker. OSU was scoreless on three power-play chances in the period. In net, Buckeye junior Dave Caruso (Roswell, Ga.) stopped 26 of 27 Miami shots in all 60:00. Crawford-West had 27 saves in 59:18.

The Buckeyes scored twice on nine power-play chances and held the RedHawks scoreless on all nine chances.

The Buckeyes return to action Friday and Saturday (Oct. 29-30) when they travel to Kalamazoo, Mich., to face CCHA-foe Western Michigan. The teams will meet at 7:35 p.m. Friday and at 7:05 p.m. Saturday at Lawson Arena.

Postgame Notes The series sweep was OSU’s second consecutive in CCHA play, as the team swept Ferris State on the road last weekend. Both the Bulldogs and RedHawks are members of OSU’s CCHA scheduling cluster this season.

The Buckeyes stopped Miami on all 20 power-play chances on the weekend (11 Thursday, nine Friday). Miami entered the series second in the nation and first in the CCHA in power-play percentage.

Pelley ended the weekend with five points, on three goals and two assists. He had a 1-2-3 line Thursday and two goals Friday. In his last three games against Miami, Pelley has posted four goals, four assists and eight points.

Knapp extended his scoring and assist streaks to five games (1-5-6) and Pelley moved his goal and point streaks to four (5-3-8). Maiani scored two goals in the series opener and added two assists in the finale for a four-point weekend vs. the RedHawks.

The Buckeyes’ 4-0 start in CCHA play is the first time the team opened league play with four wins since the 1983-84 team went 10-0 to start conference play.

Ohio State converted 5-of-18 (.278) power play chances in the two games combined. Pelley scored three of the Buckeyes’ power-play goals.

The win was OSU’s fourth consecutive over Miami.
