Buckeyes Kyle Coconis and Brad Smith tied for 16th at 1-under
COLUMBUS, Ohio The Ohio State men’s golf team opened the 54-hole Rio Pinar Intercollegiate Monday with a team total of 1-over 577 and occupy sixth place by themselves after 36 holes of play in Orlando, Fla.. The Buckeyes shot 288 in the morning round and 289 in the afternoon session. The event, hosted by the University of Central Florida, is being held at the Par 72, 7,003-yard Rio Pinar Golf and Country Club.
UCF leads the tournament through day one at 15-under 561 after firing a stellar 14-under 274 in the afternoon round. The Buckeyes sit three strokes back from fifth place Iowa State, whom Ohio State defeated last week in a tri-match.
Senior co-captain Kyle Coconis is tied for 16th with Brad Smith at 1-under 143 to lead the Buckeyes. Coconis, from Zanesville, Ohio, shot an opening round of 71 and followed it up with an even-par 72. Smith, a freshman from Peru, Ind., had a morning round of 72 before firing a 71.
Freshman Bo Hoag put himself in position to have another solid tournament after shooting 72-73 (+1). Hoag, a native of Upper Arlington, Ohio, is in a tie for 29th and is the third Buckeye golfer in the Top 30.
Reigning Big Ten Player of the Week, Patrick Simard, got off to a steady start shooting an opening round 73 (+1). A second round 78 dropped himl to a tie for 71st. The sophomore from Marbella, Spain, shot a 65 last week against Florida Atlantic and Iowa State and leads the team with a stroke average just over 70 per 18 holes.
Also competing for Ohio State is junior Dan Rush who is tied for 75th after shooting 79-73 (+8).
The Rio Pinar Intercollegiate will continue with the final 18 holes Tuesday, with the teams teeing off at 8 a.m.
