Men’s Basketball Press Conference: Andre Wesson

Summer workouts have resumed for the Ohio State men’s basketball team after posting back-to-back 20-win seasons and NCAA Tournament appearances under head coach Chris Holtmann.

Andre Wesson, who will be a senior in 2019-20, has been a key component to Ohio State’s recent success after missing postseason play as a freshman.

Wesson completed his junior season third on the team in scoring with 8.6 points per game and rebounding with 4.1 a contest. He had his best shooting year of his career, making 102-of-237 shots (.430). He also posted season bests in assists (62), blocks (15) and steals (20).

For his career, Wesson has 463 career points and 240 rebounds in 98 games played.

Ohio State opens the 2019-20 season at Value City Arena vs. Cincinnati and will play host to Villanova in The Gavitt Games Nov. 13. The Buckeyes travel to North Carolina (Dec. 4) for the Big Ten/ACC Challenge and will meet Kentucky in Las Vegas Dec. 21 in the CBSSports Challenge. Just after the holidays, West Virginia and Ohio State clash at Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse in the first Cleveland Classic Dec. 29.

On being a senior leader
“I’m just going as hard as I can every day showing guys how to work.”

On CJ Walker, who sat out last year after a transfer from Florida State
“He knows how to win. He has been to an Elite Eight. He can show us how to get there and improve on that. I’m excited to see where CJ can help us reach.”

On Improving on what he accomplished last year
“I thought I definitely improved from my sophomore to junior season.  Now I am trying to take an even bigger step.”

On new 3-point line
“I doesn’t look like that big of a difference. But even the two or three (additional) inches is going to be a big deal. It is something we have been working on in trying to get more shots behind the new line.”

On team typically playing through a center (brother Kaleb Wesson) and new 3-point line
“Floor spacing is a big thing but in order for it to be a big thing you have to hit shots. (Kaleb) can definitely help space the floor but it can also shrink the floor on him if we are not hitting shots.”

Non-conference schedule helping team
“The Big Ten is going to be tough again this year. Playing such great teams early in the year will help test us early.”

Early games helping prepare for Postseason
“Those early games can change if you make the (NCAA) tournament or are seeded in the tournament.”
