Melina Wilkison Is Big Ten’s Co-Player of the Week

COLUMBUS, Ohio After a week that saw her hit .581 and help Ohio State win eight games on its spring break trip, sophomore outfielder Melina Wilkison was named the Big Ten’s co-Player of the Week on Monday, the conference office announced.

Wilkison had at least one hit in all eight games and multiple hits in five contests. She drove in 11 runs, scored 11 times and had a .806 slugging percentage. Wilkson had 18 hits in 31 at-bats, including two doubles, one triple and one home run.

In a 13-2 win at Charleston Southern on Tuesday, Wilkson went 5-for-5 with a home run and three RBI. She also became the first player in 24 years to collect five hits in a game. Later in the week, she was 4-for-5 with three runs scored and three RBI in a 9-2 win over East Carolina.

Currently on a nine-game hitting streak, Wilkison leads the team in batting average (.427) and RBI (22). She’s third in the conference in hitting and her 22 runs driven in ranks ninth.

The Buckeyes (17-7) have won 11 consecutive games and will look to make it 12 when they play their home opener tomorrow against Kent State at 4 p.m. Admission and parking at Buckeye Field are both free.
