Meet the True Freshmen

COLUMBUS, Ohio – A true freshman quartet arrived on campus this fall and will soon don their Buckeye jersey for the first time with the 2020 Ohio State Men’s Volleyball season fast approaching. Let’s highlight Samuel Clark, Justin Howard, Matt Tompkins and Michael Wright.

SAMUEL CLARK
6’6” | Middle Blocker | Baltimore, Md. | Loyola Blakefield H.S.
• All-Maryland Interscholastic Association (MIAA) First Team honoree in both 2018 and 2019
• Loyola Bakerfield High’s Fall Athlete of the Year for 2018
• Selected to participate in the USA Volleyball High Performance Program, competing for USA Youth Continental Red in the USAV High Performance Championships
• Brother, Will Clark, plays basketball at the University of Maryland
• Engineering major


JUSTIN HOWARD
6’6” | Middle Blocker | Pacific Palisades, Calif. | Palisades Charter H.S.
• Team captain for both Palisades Charter High School and the Pac6 Volleyball Club in 2019
• Two-time All-CIF Los Angeles Team member during back-to-back-to-back city championship seasons
• Led Pac6 VC to a third place finish in the 2018 Junior Nationals
• Competed with the Southern California Volleyball Association (SCVA) International for the 2018 USA Volleyball High Performance Championship Tournament
• SCVA won its first USAV High Performance national title in ’18, lifted by Howard’s match-winning ace to clinch a five-set semifinals victory
• Brother, Spencer Howard, plays soccer at Northwestern University


MATT TOMPKINS
6’2” | Outside Hitter | Euless, Texas | Trinity H.S.
• Played club ball for High Performance-STL
• High Performance-STL team captain during the 2018-19 season
• USA Volleyball 18s Open All-Tournament Team selection after leading squad to a fifth place finish in 2018
• Twice placed on the Volleyball Magazine‘Top-25 Underclassmen to Watch’ list


MICHAEL WRIGHT
6’4” | Setter | Glen Allen, Va. | Deep Run H.S.
• Lifted Deep Run High School to back-to-back Virginia state championships in 2017 and 2018 while earning Player of the Year accolades at the state, region and metro level both seasons
• Also competed for the Richmond Volleyball Club (six years) and East Coast Volleyball Club (one year)
