Meet the Buckeye Men’s Hockey Freshmen

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s hockey program has added six freshmen to the roster for 2017-18, Steve Rohlik, Buckeye head coach, announced. The class joins 19 returnees from last season’s NCAA Tournament team, along with two transfers who are eligible this season after sitting out a season ago.

The rookies include forwards Eugene Fadyeyev and Austin Pooley, defensemen Grant Gabriele and Michael Rounds and goalies Evan Moyse and Tommy Nappier. Of the freshmen, two hail from Ohio and two are Michigan natives, while there is a St. Louis product and a native of Ukraine.

Spent two seasons with Madison Capitols in the USHL … skated in 56 games in 2016-17 and had 29 points, with six goals and 23 assists, while serving as an assistant captain … five goals and 10 points in 28 games for the Capitols in 2015-16 … represented Ukraine in IIHF World Junior U18 Tournament in 2015 … played five games with USHL Madison in 2014-15 and skated in 16 regular season games, along with four postseason contests, for the Madison U18 team … played with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Knights 16U team … member of national championship team with Wilkes-Barre in 2011-12.

Played 34 games for the Waterloo Black Hawks in the USHL in 2016-17, with 20 points on four goals and 16 assists … also saw action in eight playoff games … represented the United States in five international tournaments, including winning bronze at 2014 U18 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament … skated with Omaha (6 gp, 1g, 1a, 2p), Chicago (32 gp, 3g, 8a, 11p) and Muskegon (24gp, 5g, 8a, 13p) in the USHL in 2015-16 … spent 2013-14 and 2014-15 with U.S. National Team Development Program and had 16 points (4g, 12a) in 50 games with the U18 team … played with Little Caesars (2007-10), Belle Tire (2011-12) and Compuware (2013) before moving to NTDP.

Played in the NAHL with the Wichita Falls Wildcats in 2016-17 … saw action in 33 games and finished with a .910 save percentage and 3.10 goals-against average … spent two seasons in the North American 3 Hockey League … competed for the Kanata Lasers in 2015-16 and had an .889 save percentage in 15 games … played for the Wisconsin Whalers in 2014-15; saw action in 26 games and posted a.927 save percentage and 2.50 goals-against average … played with the Cleveland Junior Lumberjacks growing up.

Played for the Chicago Steel and Omaha Lancers in the USHL in 2016-17 … saw action in 10 games with the Steel and had an 8-1-1 ledger, with a 1.87 goals-against average and .929 save percentage … played in 33 games with the Lancers, with 2.93 gaa and .893 sv%, earning team’s Three Stars award … played for the Springfield Jr. Blues in the North American Hockey League in 2015-16 and saw action in 39 games, garnering 2.45 goals-against average and .919 save percentage … named to NAHL Midwest Division All-Rookie Team and tabbed team’s MVP … played in 40 games over two seasons with the St. Louis AAA Blues before moving to the NAHL; team finished third at the Tier 1 National Championship.

Prior to Ohio State: Skated with the Youngstown Phantoms in the USHL in 2016-17 and had 32 points, with 21 goals and 11 assists, in 60 regular season games while serving as an assistant captain … spent two seasons with USHL Fargo Force … team captain and posted 11 points on four goals and seven assists in 60 games during 2015-16 … totaled 15 points (8g, 7a) in 57 games in 2014-15 and was an assistant captain … played in 46 games and four playoff games with Omaha Lancers in the USHL in 2013-14, registering eight points (1g, 7a) … played with Ohio Blue Jackets AAA program, collecting 82 points on 29 goals and 53 assists over two seasons.

Skated with the Des Moines Buccaneers in the USHL in 2016-17 and had 12 points, with 10 assists, in 57 regular season games while serving as an assistant captain … played in 55 games for the Wichita Falls Wildcats of the North American Hockey League in 2015-16, earning 22 points on seven goals and 15 assists … skated in nine playoff games as Wildcats reached NAHL championship … played with the South Division team at the 2016 NAHL Top Prospects Tournament … skated with the Lansing Capitals of the North American Prospects Hockey League (NAPHL) for three seasons before moving to the NAHL.

Season Coming Soon

The Buckeyes kick off the season with an exhibition game vs. Ryerson Sept. 30 in Value City Arena. The regular season begins at Wisconsin Oct. 6-7 with a Big Ten series. The regular season home slate opens with games vs. Rensselaer Oct. 13-14.

Ohio State is coming off an NCAA Tournament appearance and was 21-12-6 overall, with an 11-8-1 mark in Big Ten play, last season. The squad ranked third nationally in scoring offense with 3.92 goals per game and led the NCAA on the power play, converting 31.6 percent of its chances.
