Columbus, Ohio— On the strength of her five-point weekend against Minnesota State, senior Julia McKinnon has been named WCHA Offensive Player of the Week for the second time in her career.
This marks the third time the Kelowna, British Columbia native has been bestowed with a WCHA honor; she was named WCHA Rookie of the Week once as a freshman and was previously named Offensive Player of the Week on Feb. 5, 2014.
In the undefeated weekend against the Mavericks, McKinnon tied for the team lead with five points, setting a new career-high for points in a series. The bulk of that production came in Ohio State’s 8-3 victory in which she scored twice and added two assists, giving her a new single-game career-high of four points. With five points this past weekend, she tied with a handful of other skaters for the most in college hockey during that time span. On the season, the alternate captain has tallied five goals and six assists, as well as Ohio State’s only shorthanded goal of the season
McKinnon is now the third Buckeye to receive individual recognition from the WCHA this season. Freshmen Maddy Field and Lauren Boyle were both named Rookies of the Week within the first month of the season, with Boyle’s award coming after Ohio State’s home series against Minnesota State.
Those three, along with the rest of the Buckeyes, will be on the road for a two-game set against conference foe Minnesota Duluth. Friday’s game is slated for an 8:07 ET puck drop, while Saturday’s is set for 5:07 ET.
