Ohio State Postgame Quotes
Ohio State 90, Walsh 63 (Exhibition)
November 13, 2008

Thad Matta, Ohio State Head coach
On the game
“It was good for us to get out, be in a game condition and play in front of people. We really played like team tonight and everyone was on the same page. I love that we had 21 assists. We need to get Dallas (Lauderdale) healthy because he brings another athleticism for us, but I think we did a decent job tonight.”

On Evan Turner
“He was active tonight. He did a good job rebounding. I give a lot of the offensive putbacks to his credit and he found the area. He had four assists and one turnover. He’s been high in practice in assists.”

On the second half
“I think we did better in the second half containing the ball. We were playing hard to get back to element of an attacking mentality defensively. I thought the guys did a good job of getting out after the rebounds and spacing the floor.”

Ohio State Players
Jeremy Simmons, junior guard
On his first game as a Buckeye
“It was a good experience. It was good to get our feet wet out there and I think we all played well together. It’s good to get the first one out of the way.”

On his competition with Anthony Crater for the starting point guard job
“We have nothing but love for each other and we love the competition. He’s more of a pure point guard while I’m more of a scoring point guard. Coach will decide who the best guy is and who will play.”

William Buford, freshman guard
On his first game as a Buckeye
“My teammates helped me out tonight by giving me the ball when I was in a position to score. The shots were open so I took them, and tonight they fell for me.”

Walter Offutt, freshman guard
On his approach to the game
“Coach told us that we had to be ready to play tonight right from the tip-off. Walsh came in and played us hard and we did what we had to do to win the game. We played hard and that’s what coach really wanted from us.”

Anthony Carter, freshman guard
On coming out of the locker room
“We started the game with intensity and we came out of the locker room with just as much intensity.”

On shooting the ball
“I just came out and took open shots.”
B.J. Mullens, freshman center
On playing for Ohio State and being from Columbus
“It was a great feeling being from Columbus and having all the fans behind me. Being raised in Columbus and playing in Columbus is a great experience.”

On playing against Kyelce Cescato
“It was a good game for me to get my feet wet and get some good experience before the season. You just have to stay active and moving around, and we practice that everyday.”

On the Buckeye’s performance
“We’re not 100 percent. We’re going to watch the tape and learn from our mistakes. We had mistakes and we’re going to learn from them and we’ll be ready for next Thursday.”

On dunking
“I wasn’t surprised. Coach wanted me to do it everyday in practice. That’s my role.”

Jeff Young, Walsh head coach
On the game
“We were disappointed with the outcome. The second half did not go well for us. We were able to have some success against Akron the other night because we limited out turnovers. Tonight we have 18 turnovers that led to 28 Ohio State points.”

On the offense
“The whole idea was to try and get it inside and pitch it out. In the first half we had some success with it. On the wings, though, we have a tough time matching up with Ohio State.”

On Ohio State’s defense
“We didn’t have a lot of time to prepare for their zone. They stressed us out and gave us problems in the half court. A majority of our turnovers were actually in the half court and not against the press.”
