Matej Vocel Named Big Ten Tennis Athlete of the Week


COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State’s Matej Vocel has been named the Big Ten Men’s Tennis Athlete of the Week for the first week of the regular season. Vocel and the Buckeyes were 3-0 last week including a road win at No. 23 Illinois.

Vocel had a combined 4-0 record with three of those wins coming in singles play. Had three straight-set singles wins and dropped just nine combined games in six sets. Against Illinois on Saturday, he defeated Hunter Heck 6-2, 6-1 as part of the team’s 4-0 sweep. He also won at No. 1 doubles with partner Robert Cash in a 7-5 win. In his two unfinished doubles matches vs. Toledo and Xavier, he was leading 5-2 and 5-3 when the match was stopped

On the year, Vocel is 13-3 in singles with eight wins over ranked opponents. He is ranked No. 5 in the singles rankings and he and Cash are the top-ranked doubles in the country.

Vocel and the Buckeyes head to Chapel Hill, N.C., this weekend for the ITA Kickoff, hosted by North Carolina.
