COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s hockey team scored four times in the third period, including two goals by sophomore Morgan Marziali, for a 5-1 victory over Connecticut Friday at OSU Ice Rink. Three Buckeyes tallied multiple-points in the victory. The nonconference win improves the Buckeyes’ overall record to 4-5-0 and was just the second loss of the season for the Huskies who are now 7-2-0.

Senior goaltender Erika Vanderveer (Bradford, Ontario/Mississauga Jr. Chiefs) stopped 34 of 35 shots faced for her fourth-consecutive game with over 30 saves. She improved to 3-2-0 overall this season.

With the score tied a 1-1 after the second intermission, Marziali (St. Mary’s, Ontario/St. Michael’s) scored twice within a two-minute time span early in the third period to give the Buckeyes a 3-1 lead. She scored both goals, her fifth and sixth of the season, on wrist shots close to the net. Marziali tallied her first goal at 4:10 on an assist from junior Shelby Aldous (LaSalle, Ontario/Windsor Wildcats), with the second one coming at 6:02 on a pass from junior Lisa Chesson (Plainfield, Ill./Chicago Mission).

Junior Erin Keys (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall) notched her fifth goal of the season just minutes later to up the OSU lead to 4-1. While on the power play, Keys fired a one-timer from the left side of the net with passes from sophomore Megan Hostasek (Kimberley, British Columbia/Warner School) and Chesson.

Sophomore Olivia Antognoli (Granite City, Ill./Team Illinois U-19) finished the Ohio State scoring with a goal at 17:07, her first career point as a Buckeye. Also notching the first point of her career on the goal was classmate Whitney Miller (Anchorage, Alaska/NAHA) who picked up the assist.

The teams skated to a scoreless first period, with Connecticut tallying 13 shots to Ohio State’s seven. The Huskies had two power play opportunities in the stanza, but were unable to capitalize on the man-advantage.

The Buckeyes and Huskies exchanged goals with minutes remaining in the second period to take a 1-1 tie into the second intermission. UConn got on the board when Cristin Allen stripped the puck in the OSU zone and passed it to Amy Hollstein who flicked it in from the left side at 16:40 for a 1-0 lead.

Ohio State answered just 20 seconds later to even the score at 1-all. Aldous took the faceoff at the left circle in the UConn zone. Aldous flicked it into the corner where Marziali dug it out and passed it up to junior Tessa Bonhomme (Sudbury, Ontario/Sudbury Lady Wolves). She skated it in toward the Husky net and jabbed it in past netminder Brittany Wilson at 3:00.

Along with two goals, Marziali added an assist for a three-point game. Aldous and Chesson each had two assists.

Overall, the Huskies had a 35-30 edge in shots. Ohio State was 1-for-3 on the power play with a perfect 4-for-4 penalty kill performance.

Ohio State and Connecticut will conclude their nonconference series with a 4 p.m. game Saturday at OSU Ice Rink.
