COLUMBUS, Ohio – Sophomore Myles Martin and true freshman Luke Pletcher each took part in the opening rounds of the 54th Ken Kraft Midlands Championships on Thursday at Welsh-Ryan Arena on the campus of Northwestern. Martin and Pletcher are representing the Scarlet and Gray at one of the most prestigious tournaments, which this year includes 39 teams and more than 400 wrestlers.

Martin and Pletcher each won their first three matches of the day but ultimately lost in the quarterfinals to fall into the consolation bracket at 141 and 184 lbs., respectively. They resume action tomorrow at 1 p.m. ET. Action can be seen live on

In his opening match of the day, Pletcher (17-1) turned up the heat in the third period. He took a four point lead (6-2) against Mousa Jodeh of Illinois and stretched it into a 12-3 major decision by scoring an escape, two takedowns and tacked on a riding time point.

Pletcher moved on to a second round matchup against Angelo Silvestro of SIU Edwardsville where he once again broke open a close match in the third period. Leading 4-2, Pletcher scored a quick escape and then takedown to take a 7-2 lead and then added another takedown less than a minute later. He also tacked on a riding time bonus point for the final 10-6 decision.

Against ninth-seeded Kyle Springer of Eastern Michigan, Pletcher fell behind 4-2 at the end of the first after being taken down twice, but turned the tables in the second with two takedowns of his own to knot the score at 6-6. Pletcher went ahead 7-6 on an opening escape in the third and then scored the decisive points on a takedown while accumulating a riding time bonus point.

Pletcher made a big statement in the opening 10 seconds of his quarterfinal match against top-seeded and third-ranked Matthew Kolodzik of Princeton, getting a takedown immediately for a quick 2-0 lead. He couldn’t, however, sustain the momentum, giving up a reversal, escape and two takedowns over the next two periods before eventually falling 9-3.

Martin (16-2) was pushed to the limit in his first bout of the championships as he needed overtime to knock off Anthony Mancini of Franklin and Marshall, 12-10. Martin led 8-5 entering the third period and quickly stretched it to 10-5 on a takedown, but Mancini scored on an escape, takedown and stalling point to knot it at 10-10. In the sudden victory period, Martin finished on a takedown with just 11 seconds remaining.

Martin had a decidedly easier time in the second round against Carson Powell of Iowa State, jumping out to a 4-1 first period lead and then scoring on a reversal to start the second that made the score 6-1. He took Powell down one more time in the period and then twice in the third period all while accumulating over 3:00 of riding time for a 14-4 major decision.

In the Round of 16, Martin met a familiar Big Ten foe – Purdue’s Tanner Lynde. Martin worked two first period takedowns, and on the second got Lynde on his back and finished the fall in 2:31. It was his fourth fall of the season, tying him for second most on the team.

Against seventh-seeded and 10th-ranked Jack Dechow of Old Dominion in the quarterfinals, Martin was knotted in a 4-4 tie after Dechow’s takedown to end the second period was overturned. Dechow escaped to begin the third and then scored the decisive takedown with under 30 seconds remaining for a 7-4 decision.
