COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s hockey team defeated Bemidji State by a score of 4-1 Friday at John Glas Fieldhouse in Bemidji, Minn., to increase its win streak to four games. Senior forward Katie Maroney scored her first two goals of the season to lead the Buckeyes offensively while senior goaltender Erika Vanderveer continued her strong play and allowed just one goal with 26 saves. Ohio State moves to 6-5-0 overall and 2-5-0 in the WCHA, while the Beavers fall to 3-6-0 and 2-3-0 in league games.

After falling behind 1-0 in the first period on a BSU goal by Kelly Hart, Ohio State scored twice in the second period to take a 2-1 lead into the second intermission. Maroney (La Pointe, Ind./Culver Academy) evened the score at 1-all just 2:46 into the stanza when her shot went in off Beaver goaltender Emily Brookshaw. Her first goal of the season was assisted by freshman Raelyn LaRocque (The Pas, Manitoba/Edmonton Chimos) for her third helper of the year.

Junior Shelby Aldous (LaSalle, Ontario/Windsor Wildcats) then gave the Buckeyes the lead with a goal at 12:47. Senior Lacey Schultz (Kelvington, Saskatchewan/College of Notre Dame) passed the puck up to sophomore Morgan Marziali (St. Mary’s, Ontario/St. Michael’s), who fed it over to Aldous, 2-on-1, for the score over Brookshaw’s left shoulder. The goal was Aldous’ third of the season and extended her point streak to three games. Marziali notched her fifth helper of the year while Schultz picked up her first. The Buckeyes built upon their lead in the third period with two more goals for a 4-1 final. While on the penalty kill, Jody Heywood (Regina, Saskatchewan/Regina Cougars) stripped the puck from a BSU player and skated it toward the Beaver goal, backhanding it in at 6:03 to increase the Ohio State lead to 3-1. The shorthanded goal was the first career of her career and third overall this season. It was the fourth OSU shorthanded goal on the season, with all four scored by different players.

Maroney sealed the win with her second goal at 10:00, firing in the rebound off a shot by freshman Michele Tonnessen (Gahanna, Ohio/Ohio Flames). Tonnessen picked up her first career point as a Buckeye with the assist.

Vanderveer (Bradford, Ontario/Mississauga Jr. Chiefs), the USCHO Defensive Player of the Week for two weeks in a row, continued her strong play, stopping 26 of 27 shots faced, including 12 Bemidji State power play shots. In her last four games, Vanderveer has allowed just three goals with 127 saves. She is 5-2-0 this season.

Overall, the Buckeyes and Beavers were even on shots with 27 apiece. Ohio State was 0-for-6 on the power play while Bemidji State was 0-for-5. The OSU penalty kill has not allowed a power play goal for the last three games.
