COLUMBUS, Ohio – Sophomore Noelle Malley capped off her first tournament of the 2011-12 season with a Flight A singles title at the Martha Thorn Invitational in Morgantown, W. Va., Sunday. The event, hosted by West Virginia, kicked off Friday morning and ran through Sunday afternoon.
“Noelle has been working very hard on her game and her fitness,” Chuck Merzbacher, Ohio State head coach, said after the match. “and it certainly showed today. We are very proud of her taking the title. It was a well-deserved win.”
After defeating opponents from Youngstown State, Duquesne and Virginia Tech, Malley took on WVU’s Emily Mathis in the championship match Sunday morning. The sophomore Buckeye showed her prowess against the Mountaineer as she reeled off a pair of 6-3 sets to take the match and the title, 6-3, 6-3.
Earlier in the day, Malley teamed with Tiffany Dittmer to take down Virginia Tech’s Tea Ivanovic and Katie Blow in Flight A doubles consolation action, 9-7.
Next up for the Buckeyes is the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Midwest Regional Oct. 20-25. The 5-day event, hosted by Ohio State, will feature the top players from the region as they play to earn a berth at the ITA National Indoors Nov. 3-6 in Flushing, N.Y.
