For several years, Brutus Buckeye has been the king among mascots in social media circles. The @Brutus_Buckeye account has provided tens of thousands of followers with breaking Ohio State news, promotions and interactive fun for all followers. Now, there is a new handle making its debut this weekend – @OhioStAthletics – the official news feeds for the Ohio State Department of Athletics.

“The introduction of the @OhioStAthletics account will lift the responsibility of straightforward news from the Brutus account,” Pat Kindig, director of social media marketing, said. “It will allow the persona of our lively and fun-loving mascot to engage followers in more social interaction, event promotion and enhance the overall experience of being a Buckeye fan. The @OhioStAthletics account will serve as the main news feed for the department of athletics.”

Here is a breakdown of what fans can expect for each of the Twitter accounts:


  • Distribute news updates generated by the department of athletics
  • Share news articles and features from local and national media
  • Provide moderate updates from sporting events
  • Repurpose promotions


  • Event promotion
  • Gameday experience (commentary, photos, updates, traffic, etc.)
  • Brutus Photos
  • Fan submissions/interaction/contests

With the addition of @OhioStAthletics, there now are a total of 34 Twitter accounts within the department of athletics (view).

The official Ohio State athletics presence on Facebook – – remains the most followed account in the country among collegiate sports programs. At more than 1.33 million likes, ranks ahead of Florida, Texas, Alabama and North Carolina as athletic department accounts in the National Top 25.

The Ohio State Facebook account interacts with more than 20 countries and is viewed in more than 20 languages.
