BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Michela Paradiso’s goal off a Kayla Varner cross in the 97th minute gave the Ohio State women’s soccer team a 2-1 comeback win over Indiana Friday evening at Armstrong Stadium in Bloomington, Ind. The win marked Ohio State head coach Lori Walker’s 200th win at the helm of the Buckeyes and improve Ohio State to 4-3-0 overall and 1-0-0 in Big Ten play. The Hoosiers fall to 4-3-0, 0-1-0 in conference play.
“I’m really proud of this team for showing some resiliency,” Walker said. “We chased the game for a long time and it came down to the waning seconds. To send the game into overtime that late shows a lot about our team. It’s a tough way to start but there are no easy games in our conference and hopefully this will help us moving forward.”
After Ohio State came out with a few early chances, Indiana took the lead in the 38th minute when Jessie Bujouves headed home a Tori Keller for the 1-0 Hoosier lead.
Indiana took the lead into the break after holding a 6-5 lead in shots.
The Buckeyes had an opportunity in the 55th minute when Nikki Walts played a free kick into the box that was gathered by Sydney Dudley but the shot from the top of the box narrowly missed wide right as the Hoosiers preserved the 1-0 lead.
After a few more Ohio State chances, including a Lindsay Agnew volley in the 63rd minute that sailed just high, the Buckeyes were able to convert in the final minute of play when Paradiso collected just inside the box and was taken down by an Indiana defender for a penalty kick with two seconds remaining. Varner then went right and converted past Indiana goalkeeper Sarah Stone for her first goal of the season to send the game to overtime at 1-1.
The Buckeyes were able to muster two shots early in the overtime period before Paradiso converted the game-winner.
For the game, each team tallied 12 shots, including five on goal, while the Buckeyes held a 7-5 lead in corner kicks. Ohio State goalkeeper Megan Geldernick made four saves in the win.
Ohio State travels to Purdue for a 3 p.m. match on BTN Sunday.
