Lee, Watanabe Lead Second-Round Charge as Buckeyes Sit Three Strokes Back of Lead at Big Ten Championships


MAINEVILLE, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s golf team made a back-nine charge at the Big Ten Championships Saturday at TPC River’s Bend and sits at 5-under par, three strokes back of leader Maryland and two back of second-place Michigan State.

Final-round play tees off at 8 a.m. Sunday with the Buckeyes teeing off in the final pairings at 9:48 a.m.

Junior Jaclyn Lee sits atop the leaderboard once again after posting a second-round 68 while senior Rio Watanabe is in a tie for second after tying for the second-round low 67. Lee has a five-stroke lead on the rest of the back at 10-under while Watanabe, along with two others, enter the final round at 5-under. Lee posted six birdies en route to her second-round 68 while Watanabe had seven, against just two bogeys, for a 67.

Sophomore Alex Wright was steady for the second-consecutive round, posting a second-straight 73 to tie for 20th through two rounds. Junior Niki Schroeder notched a 2-over 74 in the second round and sits 55th. Sophomore Adeena Shears bounced back with a 76 and ranks 68th while freshman Alanis Sakuma is in a tie for 69th.

After going 9-under on par-5’s on the first day, Ohio State went 10-under on the second day and is the best in par-5 scoring. The Buckeyes have tied for the second-most birdies with 31 while notching two of the four eagles through two rounds. Lee is a tournament-best 8-under in par-5 scoring while Watanabe is third at 6-under. Lee also is tied for second in par-4 scoring at 1-under, and is in a tie for second with Watanabe in par-3 scoring at 1-under

Ohio State went 9-under in par-5 scoring, the best of any team through 18 holes. Lee’s two eagles matched the total of the rest of the 84-competitor field as her 5-under tally on the par-5’s is the best through the opening round. Lee also is tied for second in par-4 scoring at 1-under while Wright and Watanabe are tied for fourth in Par-5 scoring at 2-under.
