Lee Paces Buckeyes to Third-Place Finish Through 36 Holes of East & West Challenge

VERONA, Wis. – The Ohio State women’s golf team finished third in 36 holes of stroke play qualifying at the East & West Match Play Challenge Sunday at University Ridge Golf Course in Verona, Wis. The Buckeyes will be the third seed for match play starting Monday morning, taking on Iowa State Monday morning.

Ohio State started the day with an opening-round 300 in the first round of stroke play before storming back with a second-round 284, the best of any team in the afternoon, topping the second-best Michigan by six strokes.

Junior Jaclyn Lee tied for the lead Sunday with Oregon’s Kathleen Scavo at 7-under (70-67). In addition, sophomore Alex Wright posted a career-low round of 69 in the second round after an opening-round 77 to tie for 13th.

Lee tallied the second-most birdies of any golfer on the opening day with 12, just behind Oregon’s Alexis Phadungmartvorakul. Wright also rolled in seven birdies, tying for the sixth-most of any player in the eight-team event. Lee played the Par-3’s in 2-under par and the Par-4’s in 5-under par, tying for the best through the first two rounds. She finished her day by notching her birdie on two of her last three holes to finish the back nine in a 3-under 33.

Wright responded from an opening-round 77 to post a career-best score on her second round, bolstered by a back-nine 33 with four birdies, to improve her score by eight strokes in the second round.

As a team, the Buckeyes tied for the best as a team with an 8-over par score on the Par-4’s.

Through two rounds, junior Niki Schroeder sat in a tie for 18th after carding rounds of 75-73, while sophomore Adeena Shears went 78-75 for a tie for 34th and senior Rio Watanabe ranked tied for 39th with a 79-76 finish. Freshman Sofia Seldemirova competed in her first collegiate rounds as an individual, going 75-82 for a T-44th finish.
