COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State University golf team shot 303 in the first round of the Puerto Rico Classic, led by Felix Kvarnstrom’s even par 72 that places him in a tie for 28th. The team started the morning playing great golf before the Rio Mar Country Club, River course bared its teeth and made scoring more difficult as the round progressed.
Senior Kvarnstrom started his round with back-to-bogeys but quickly regained his stroke, collecting three birdies across his next six holes to move to one-under for the day. He traded a couple birdies and bogeys on his next six holes before closing his round with a bogey to end the day at even par and tied for 28th.
Freshman Jackson Chandler posted the next best score for the team with a four-over 76. Chandler got as low as one-under early in the round but hit some bumps on his way into the clubhouse, playing the back nine three-over to post 76.
Freshman Patrick Schmucking finished his day five-over, with Kevin Stone and Grant Engle close behind at six and seven-over respectively.
Laken Hinton, Jack Mancinotti and Justin Wick competed in the individual tournament, played on the neighboring Ocean course, and shot four, seven and eight-over par respectively.
The Buckeyes tee off at 8 a.m. tomorrow, paired with Iowa and East Carolina for round two of the Puerto Rico Classic.
