COLUMBUS, Ohio – Redshirt senior goaltender Chelsea Knapp has been named captain of the 2013-14 Ohio State women’s hockey team, head coach Nate Handrahan announced Tuesday. Knapp becomes just the second goalie in program history to don the ‘C’ and the first since the 2001-02 season when Melissa Glaser wore it.

Redshirt junior defender Kara Gust and junior defender Kari Schmitt will lead the Buckeyes as assistant captains.

“I am excited to announce this year’s captains,” Handrahan said. “Each of them will lead in their own unique way. They are a hard working group that will serve our team well.”

Knapp, a native of York, N.Y., started all but one contest a season ago, posting career highs in wins (19), goals allowed average (2.50) and save percentage (.911). Her 38 career wins put her four behind former Buckeye Erika Vanderveer (2004-07) for the top spot in program history. Knapp has been named an Ohio State Scholar-Athlete in each of her four years as a student-athlete.

“I have a lot of pride in being able to put on the Buckeye jersey everyday with 22 amazing teammates,” Knapp said. “Having them vote me as captain is a huge honor. Kara, Kari and I will lead by example first and foremost, while bringing enthusiasm everyday to help our team be successful.”

A product of Orland Park, Ill., Gust transferred to Ohio State prior to last season after spending two seasons at Quinnipiac University. In her first season as a Buckeye she suited up for 35 games, tallying a goal and an assist. Gust was named an Ohio State Scholar-Athlete last season.

“Everyone plays an important role on the team so it is an honor to be recognized as a leader by my teammates,” Gust said.

Schmitt, a native of Canton, Mich., led the team with 23 assists during the 2012-13 season, finishing with a career best 28 points. The junior sits tenth on the OSU all-time list for defenseman scoring with 34 career points.  Schmitt was named a WCHA Scholar-Athlete last season and is a two-time Ohio State Scholar-Athlete.

“I am honored to be selected as an assistant captain by my teammates and look forward to being a leader for this hockey team,” Schmitt said. “I feel privileged to represent my teammates, coaches and The Ohio State University.”

The Buckeyes held their first official practice this past Saturday (Sept. 21) and open the 2012-13 campaign with an exhibition game against the Toronto Junior Aeros September 28 at 2:07 p.m. at the OSU Ice Rink.
