Box Score

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 10th-ranked Ohio State women’s hockey team defeated Minnesota State by a score of 6-4 Saturday at OSU Ice Rink to complete a season sweep of the Mavericks in the final regular-season game. The Buckeyes were led by junior forward Erin Keys, who notched her first career hat trick and added an assist. Junior defenseman Lisa Chesson also had a multiple-point performance with three assists, as well as sophomore Morgan Marziali with a goal and an assist.

At 18-12-4 overall, Ohio State has tied the program record for wins in a season. OSU finished the WCHA schedule in fourth place with 30 points and a 13-11-4 league record. Minnesota State is 16-15-2 overall, 12-14-2 in the conference.

The Mavericks opened the scoring 6:42 into the game with a goal by Ashley Young, but Keys (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall) began what would be a natural hat trick just over a minute later with a goal at 8:37. While on the power play, Keys skated the puck in and flicked a wrist shot from the left circle to knot the game at 1-all. She was assisted by Chesson (Plainfield, Ill./Chicago Mission) and freshman defenseman Rachel Davis (Horton, Mich./Honeybaked).

Keys scored again on the power play at 16:41 to give the Buckeyes a 2-1 lead into the first intermission. This time she deked the MSU goaltender and tucked the puck into the upper left corner of the goal with Chesson assisting on the goal again.

Minnesota State scored two quick power play goals in the start of the second period to regain the lead at 3-2. Kristina Bunker scored at 2:09 and Noelle Needham followed with a goal on a separate power play at 3:32.

Keys completed her hat trick at 13:12, tallying her 22nd goal of the season directly in front of the Maverick net while tapping in the puck from her knees. Marziali (St. Mary’s, Ontario/London Devilettes) and senior Lacey Schultz (Kelvington, Saskatchewan/College of Notre Dame) assisted on the goal that evened the score at 3-3 heading into the second intermission.

The Buckeyes pulled away in the third period, scoring three goals in a span of just over five minutes. Junior Jody Heywood (Regina, Saskatchewan/Regina Cougars) gave OSU the lead for good when she tallied a power play goal at 4:58, and senior Katie Maroney (La Porte, Ind./Culver Academy) followed by a even-strength lamplighter at 5:25 to make it 5-3. Marziali then upped the lead to three goals when she scored at 10:09. Keys assisted on Marziali’s goal for her fourth point of the game, tying her career high.

Young of Minnesota State scored for a second time at 18:32 for the last goal of the game and 6-4 final.

Ohio State amassed 48 minutes worth of penalties on 16 infractions, including two 10-minute misconducts, while Minnesota State had nine penalties for a total of 18 minutes. The Mavericks were 3-of-13 on the power play while OSU was 3-of-7. The Buckeyes had a 38-33 advantage in shots.

With 47 points overall, Keys finishes the regular season of the WCHA second in scoring and is also tied for second in the OSU record books in single season scoring. Her 22 goals are tied for second in the conference and she has a league-leading 12 power play goals.

Prior to the game, the women’s hockey program recognized its five senior student-athletes: Maroney, Schulz, Vanderveer, Krysta Skarda and Amber Bowman.
