TEMPE, Ariz. – Meghan Kammerdeiner’s 98th-minute game-winner lifted the Ohio State women’s soccer team over Arizona State, 2-1, in the Buckeyes’ season opener Friday evening at Sun Devil Soccer Stadium. The Buckeye sophomore possessed Sammy Edwards’ flick, beat a Sun Devil defender and slotted it past Arizona State goalkeeper Megan Delaney to give Ohio State its fifth-consecutive season-opening win.
“It was a tough game in some tough elements,” Lori Walker-Hock, Ohio State head coach, said. “We didn’t do a good job of settling the game down as much as we needed to but we found a way to win. At the end of the day that’s what you have to do. It’s always important to start your year off on the right foot. Our seniors did such a good job of bringing the freshmen along in the summer and teaching them the Ohio State way. My assistants did a great job today with their adjustments and suggestions and I feel really good about where we’re at.”
EDWARDS WITH THE FIRST GOAL OF `17
Less than seven minutes in, Kammerdeiner possessed on the right wing and passed to Arden Holden, who fed Sammy Edwards as the senior gathered at the top left of the 18-yard box and bent her strike inside the far post for the 1-0 lead.
JONES KNOTS THE SCORE IN THE 31st
The Sun Devils evened the score in the 31st minute when Jemma Purfield played a corner in from the right wing that was headed in by Olive Jones to tie the match heading into the half.
EDWARDS ALMOST GIVES BUCKEYES THE LEAD AGAIN…TWICE
In the 60th minute Marike Mousset played a beautiful cross from the right wing but Edwards’ header from the center of the box narrowly missed wide right. Two minutes later, Nikki Walts crossed from the right wing to Edwards at the far post but her header toward the near post was saved off the line by Delaney.
WILD FINAL FIVE MINUTES
With less than five minutes remaining, Haley Walker-Robinson’s header off a cross from Maggie Samanich was deflected over the crossbar by Delaney. Then, after Ohio State goalkeeper Devon Kerr made a fantastic save on a shot by Christina Edwards, a long-range blast by Angela Boyle deflected off the crossbar in the final seconds to send the match to overtime.
SUN DEVILS DENIED BY WOODWORK AGAIN
Less than a minute into overtime Purfield took a shot from the left wing that caromed off the crossbar and was cleared away before Kammerdeiner won it for the Buckeyes.
