COLUMBUS, Ohio Justin Kronauge, a member of the Ohio State men’s tennis team, fell in the round of 16 at the 2007 ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Tennis Championships Thursday. Ohio State is serving as host of the event at the Racquet Club of Columbus.

Kronauge, a sophomore from Centerville, Ohio, lost 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 to fourth seed Greg Ouellette of Florida. Kronauge was one of four Buckeyes competing in the singles bracket, but was the only OSU representative to survive day one.

In doubles action, junior Mike O’Connell and freshman Matt Allare fell to Kellen Damico and Luis Diaz Barriga of Texas 8-2. The Texas pair upset the tournament’s No. 2 seed, Jonas Berg and Erling Tveit of Mississippi, in the first round by an 8-4 margin.

Kronauge and senior Drew Eberly lost their match in the consolation bracket to Christia Rojmar and Bojan Szumanski of Texas Tech, 8-3.

Steven Moneke beat Clancy Sheilds of Boise State 6-2, 6-4 in the first round of the consolation bracket. He will face Dennis Lukacs of Baylor Saturday. Junior Bryan Koniecko also won his first round match-up against Dan Ngyuen of Harvard by a 6-0, 5-7, 6-2 score. Koniecko will take on Mislav Hizlak in the quarterfinals Saturday. The lone Buckeye to loss in the consolation round was Eberly. He was upended by Andre Begemann of Pepperdine 6-0, 6-7, 6-3.

Action will resume at 9:30 a.m. Saturday with the consolation quarterfinals of the men’s and women’s singles brackets followed by the main draw and consolation rounds of the men’s doubles.  

Admission to the 2007 ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Tennis Championships is free and runs through Sunday.
