COLUMBUS, Ohio Justin Kronauge, a member of the Ohio State men’s tennis team, advanced to the round of 16 at the 2007 ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Tennis Championships Thursday. Ohio State is serving as host of the event at the Racquet Club of Columbus.

Kronauge, a sophomore out of Centerville, Ohio, was a 7-6 (5), 7-5 winner over Mislav Hizak of Embry-Riddle in the first round. He next will face No. 4 seed Greg Ouellette of Florida.

Kronauge was one of four Buckeyes competing in the singles bracket, but was the only OSU representative to advance in the main draw. Junior Steven Moneke, a finalist at the ITA National Indoors last season, fell to Texas A&M’s Conor Pollack in the opening round by a 6-3, 6-3 score. Drew Eberly, a senior from Lake Forest, Ill., lost to Albert Larregola of Virginia Tech 7-6, 3-6, 4-6.  The upsets continued when fifth seed and junior Bryan Koniecko of Long Island, N.Y., was upended by Matthius Wellerman of Mississippi 3-6, 6-3, 3-6.

In doubles action, junior Mike O’Connell and freshman Matt Allare beat Dan Buikema and Mat Thibaudeau of Alabama in a hard fought match by a 9-7 score. The Buckeye tandem will face Kellen Damico and Luis Diaz Barriga of Texas Friday. The Texas pair upset the tournament’s No. 2 seed, Jonas Berg and Erling Tveit of Mississippi, in the first round by an 8-4 margin. The fourth-seed OSU duo of Eberly and Kronauge were upset in the first round, as they lost to Taylor Fogelman and Chris Kearny of North Carolina, 8-6.

Action will resume at 9 a.m. Friday with the main draw and consolation quarterfinals of the women’s doubles brackets followed by the main draw and consolation rounds of the men’s doubles. Moneke, Koniecko and Eberly will compete in the singles consolation bracket later in the day Friday.

Admission to the 2007 ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Tennis Championships is free and runs through Sunday.
