Ohio State tallies 194.700 team total to finish seventh

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s gymnastics team scored a 194.700 at the 2010 Big Ten Women’s Gymnastics Championships Saturday in St. John Arena in front of a crowd of1,717. The Buckeyes’ team total served as the team’s third-best sum this season and was good for a seventh-place finish.

Michigan won the championship, recording a 196.900. In second place was Penn State (196.525) followed by Iowa (195.575).

2010 All-Big Ten honoree Rebecca Best finished tied for fifth in the all-around with a 39.275, a season high.

The Buckeyes, hosting their fourth conference championships in Columbus since the event began in 1982, started the seven-team meet on vault, scoring a team total of 48.7. Pacing the Scarlet and Gray on the apparatus was Best with a 9.800 to tie for eighth. Sophomore Taylor Jones was second for Ohio State with a score of 9.775 while classmate Nicole Krauter rounded out the Top Buckeye 3 with a 9.775.

Ohio State had a 48.525 on bars. Again Best was the top scorer for Ohio State as her 9.800 served as a tie for a 2010 personal best. Senior Hillary Dow, who also garnered 2010 All-Big Ten laurels, posted a 9.750. In her first conference championship of her career, freshman Colleen Dean’s 9.700 was good for third for Ohio State.

The Buckeyes got a bit of a breather in the third rotation with a bye, but quickly went back to work on the balance beam, one of the squad’s best events this season. Best, a 2009All-American, helped the Buckeyes record a 48.700 following her 9.825 performance. Dean tallied a 9.800, while senior Kristin Perchatsch earned a 9.725.

Another bye ensued for the Buckeyes in the fifth rotation before their final performance on floor. A 2010 season-high 9.850 by Best topped all Ohio State scorers and also tied for sixth overall. A 9.800 by Dean was another highlight for the Scarlet and Gray as was Krauter’s 9.725.

Friday evening, the Big Ten held its annual conference championships banquet where first and second-team honorees were named. Following the meet Saturday afternoon, the Gymnast (Brandi Personett – Penn State), Freshman (Sharaya Musser – Penn State) and co-Coaches (Bob Starkell – Illinois and Beverly Plocki – Michigan) of the Years were honored.
