ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Martin Joyce’s run ends in the semifinals as Michigan’s Alex Knight downed the Ohio State junior 6-3, 6-4 on Monday morning at the ITA Midwest Regional.
Knight got the first break of the match on a big no-ad point at 4-3 and then held on another no-ad point to win the set 6-3. The Wolverine then jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second. Joyce won a no-ad point to stay in the match at 5-3 but Knight held serve to finish the match 6-4.
Joyce is now 7-3 this fall and picked up his first ranked win of the season this weekend with a win over No. 80 Aleks Kovacevic of Illinois in the round of 16.

Ohio State junior Martin Joyce won a pair of three-set matches on Sunday to advance to the semifinals of the ITA Midwest Regional hosted by Michigan.
Joyce defeated Illinois’ sophomore Aleks Kovacevic 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 in the round of 16 and then dropped the opening set in a tiebreak to Mattias Siimar of Michigan only to comeback to win the second in a tiebreak and win the third 6-2. He will play Michigan’s Alex Knight in the semifinal at 10 a.m. on Monday morning.
Kyle Seelig also advanced to the quarterfinals but his run was ended by Western Michigan’s Maik Steiner as the Bronco won 7-5, 6-3.
Similarly, John McNally won his round of 16 match over Northwestern freshman Nick Brookes 6-4, 7-5 but ran into Knight in the quarters. Knight was up to the task and downed the Buckeye freshman 6-4, 6-1.

Just like after Friday’s doubles play at the ITA Midwest Regional, four Buckeye singles players are still alive through action on Saturday.
A total of eight Buckeyes were in the singles draw.
Riley Reist won his opening match vs. Michigan State’s Koenen before falling 6-3, 7-6 (7) to Notre Dame’s Alex Lebedev in the second round.
Alex Kobelt also won his opening round match but then fell in straight sets in the second round to Western Michigan’s Maik Steiner.
Kyle Seelig kept the momentum from the All-American Championship and won a pair of matches. He topped Cleveland State’s Phillips 6-3, 6-4 and then beat Chris Ephron of Northwestern 5-7, 6-4, 6-4. Seelig will play Michigan’s Carter Lin in the quarterfinals.
Redshirt-freshman Joseph Thomas made his collegiate debut this weekend and after three doubles wins on Friday, he won a pair of singles matches on Saturday. He started with a 6-3, 5-7, 6-3 win over Notre Dame’s Brendan Kempin. He then beat Joseph Dodridge of Wisconsin 6-2, 6-1 and will play Mattias Siimar of Michigan on Sunday.
Martin Joyce won a pair of matches in straight sets to advance to the quarterfinals where he will face Illinois’ sophomore Aleks Kovacevic.
Freshman John McNally also won two matches as he dispatched of Michigan’s Davis Crocker in the first round and after dropping the opening set to Cleveland State’s Nico Mostardi, he came back to win 6-7(3), 6-4, 6-1.
In doubles action, Joyce and McNally took down the Western Michigan pair of Olivarez and Schnobel 8-6 to advance to the semifinals while Reist and Thomas fell to the No. 2-seed Carranza and Dodridge 8-2.
In the top half of the doubles draw, Mendez and Tubert rebounded from their singles losses to defeat Howells and Lebedev 8-4. They will play the defending champs and No. 1 seed Alex Knight and Runhao Hua of Michigan in the semifinals.

Four Ohio State doubles teams begin action on Friday at the ITA Midwest Regional hosted by Michigan and three are still alive through three matches.
Matt Mendez and Hunter Tubert, who won the Big Ten doubles title together last fall, was one of the teams to win three times. They knocked off the team of Boers and Sertkaya from Illinois State 8-3 and then took down Galoustian and O’Meara from DePaul 8-4. They beat the Northwestern pair of Vandixhorn and Stary 8-5 in the nightcap to reach the quarters.
Martin Joyce and John McNally also won their opening two matches 8-3 and 8-4 to advance to the round of 16 where they blew past the team of Ciamarra and Gamble from Notre Dame 8-1. They will play Olivarez and Schnobel of Western Michigan on Saturday.
Senior Riley Reist and redshirt-freshman Joseph Thomas paired together and picked up an 8-5 win over Brookes and Fasano from Northwestern. In the second match, they topped the team of Haupt and Faveri from Western Michigan 8-7, winning the tiebreaker 7-4. They played the Valpo duo of Ancona in Kissell in the round of 16 and won that match 8-3. Reist and Thomas and Joyce and McNally are both one win away from squaring-off in the semifinals.
The singles main draw will get underway on Saturday morning. There are eight Buckeyes competing this weekend in the main draw while top-seeded JJ Wolf had to withdraw because of his run at the Futures event in Texas. Redshirt-freshman Jacob Wareti dropped his opening round qualifying match on Thursday.
The first and second round of the singles draw will be played on Saturday morning and Saturday afternoon while the doubles quarterfinals will be played on Saturday evening.
