COLLEGE GROVE, Tenn. – Fifth-year senior Logan Jones accumulated six birdies en route to a 3-under 69 in the opening round of the Intercollegiate at The Grove, earning a piece of fourth place individually. As a team, the Buckeyes are slotted sixth and within four strokes of second-place Southern Mississippi with 18 of 54 holes complete.
Ohio State finished 5-over (293) on the day, paced by Jones’ 69. The Dublin Jerome High School product is just three shots off the pace of tournament leader Dawson Armstrong (Lipscomb). Jones’ half dozen birdies ranked as the second most in the entire field. He buried four birdies on the Back 9 next to a lone bogey for 3-under in the final nine holes.
Fellow senior Boo Timko was Ohio State’s next best performer, carding a 2-over 74. He scored 1-over on both the Front and Back 9s to grab a share of 26th place. Sophomore Clark Engle and freshman Nick Sparling, making his first collegiate appearance, tallied matching 3-over 75s (tied for 36th). Engle notched 15 pars on the day while Sparling rode a roller coaster. The Buckeye rookie came out of the gates slow with 42 (+6) on the Front 9 before settling in and scorching the course to the tune of 3-under on the Back 9.
Grant Weaver rounded out the OSU lineup, notching a 5-over 77 and sitting T-52nd with 36 holes to go.
Ohio State will be paired with Lipscomb and Georgia Regents for round number two on Monday. The pairing will get things going on 9 a.m. CT/10 a.m. ET teeing off the Front 9.
