November 6, 2022

For the second consecutive season, an Ohio State doubles team was the last standing at the ITA Fall National Championship. JJ Tracy and Andrew Lutschuanig took down the No. 3 ranked team of Alexander Jong and Lui Maxted of TCU 6-3, 3-6, 10-4 to win this year’s title.

Tracy and Lutschaunig started strong on Sunday, winning the first two games and riding that momentum to a 6-3 victory. In the second, TCU won the opening game and the Buckeyes answered with a big hold from 0-40. TCU then got the first break and like the Buckeyes in the first, the Horned Frog duo held to a 6-3 win.

For the fifth consecutive match this week, the Buckeyes found themselves in a super-breaker to decide the match. Sunday’s breaker was the best of the week. Tracy and Lutschaunig raced to a 4-0 lead and led 5-1 at the first change over. They never let up and would cruise to a 10-4 victory.

Another day and another three-set win for JJ Tracy and Andrew Lutschaunig. This time, they take down the No. 14 team of Jake Finn Bass and Juan Pablo Grassi Mazzuchi of Baylor 6-4, 3-6, 10-7.

Tracy and Lutschaunig won the opening service game of the match and then broke in the second to take a 2-0 lead. They would hold that advantage the rest of the first set to a 6-4 victory. Baylor’s duo broke early in the second set and went on to a 6-3 win.

That setup a good tiebreaker. Both teams held serve through the first five points and then Tracy ripped a forehand to give the OSU a 4-2 lead at the first change over. After a Baylor point, Lutschaunig held on both his service points which was then followed by a Baylor double-fault. Trailing 7-3, the Baylor duo battled back to get back on serve at 7-6 with three consecutive points. Lutschaunig then hit a winner to give the Buckeyes an 8-6 and that was the margin they needed. The Richboro, Pa., native finished the match with two more points from the service line and the Buckeyes were on to the finals.

In the championship match, they will face the No. 3 ranked duo of Alexander Jong and Lui Maxted of TCU.

The margins are so thin in doubles tennis and that was certainly evident on Friday afternoon between the Buckeyes team of JJ Tracy and Andrew Lutschaunig and Max Westphal and Theo Winegar of Columbia. After holding serve for much of the opening set, a late break for the Columbia duo gave them a 7-5 victory. In the second, Tracy and Lutschaunig got a pair of early breaks and rode that to 6-4 victory.

In the deciding super-breaker, the Columbians went up two points early and Lutschaunig and Tracy claimed back to pull even. With the score tied at 7-7, the Buckeye won back-to-back points, the second of which came on a great return from Lutschaunig. Leading 9-7 and Lutschaunig serving, the Columbia duo got one point back but a strong first serve from Lutschaunig was too much to return and the Buckeyes were on to the semifinals.

They will take on Jake Finn Bass and Juan Pablo Grassi Mazzuchi of Baylor on Saturday afternoon.

Tracy started the day with a quarterfinal singles match against Florida State’s Antoine Cornut-Chauvinc. Tracy won the opening set in convincing fashion 6-1 but then Cornut-Chauvinc turned the tables. He won the next two sets 6-0 and 6-2 to win the match and end Tracy’s run.

Tracy opened his day by taking on Presbyterian’s Dusan Milanovic in a round of 16 singles match. Both players gathered a couple of breaks in the opening set which would end in a tiebreaker. Tracy raced to a 5-1 lead in the breaker and ended up winning 7-2. The second set was just as hotly contested and it too went to a tiebreaker. Milanovic would win that breaker, forcing a deciding third set.

In the third, Tracy went up 3-1 and Milanovic was able to get it back squared at 3-3. Tracy broke again to go up 4-3, held for 5-3 and would then close out the set and match 6-4. He advances to the quarterfinals where he will face No. 2 seed Antoine Cornut-Chauvinc of Florida State.

He then joined Lutschaunig for a round of 16 doubles match against VCU’s Ryan Stable and Matisse Bobichon. The Buckeye duo went down a break early in the first but rallied to get back even and would take the first set in a tiebreaker 7-2. Bobichon and Stable won the second set 6-3 and the match would be decided by a super-breaker. Tracy and Lutschaunig jumped out to a 5-2 lead and would hold that edge throughout. Tracy capped the win with a nice forehand service return and the Buckeyes were on to the quarterfinals. They will face Columbia’s No. 21 ranked tandem of Max Westphal and Theo Winegar.

The Buckeyes took the opening set 6-4 but then dropped the second set 6-1. In the super-breaker, Tracy and Lutschaunig ran out to as much as a 9-4 lead and won the decider 10-5.
