ITA All-American Championship Recap


October 9, 2022

JJ Tracy’s run ended on Sunday in the championship match of the consolation singles bracket. He took on Stanford’s Nishesh Basavareddy and despite a battle, he fell 6-3, 6-3 to finish runner-up. It was a good week and a good start to the season for the Hilton Head, S.C. native.

October 8, 2022

JJ Tracy won again! He defeated Tennessee’s Shunsuke Mitsui 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 to move on to the championship match. Mitsui was ranked No. 82 and Tracy now has three wins over ranked foes.

On Sunday, Tracy will take on Stanford’s Nishesh Basavareddy, who is the second-ranked freshman/newcomer, for the consolation title.

October 7, 2022

Bernard’s run ended in the round of 16 as he battled Duke’s No. 28 Garrett Johns into three sets. He dropped the opening set 6-2 but rallied to win the second 6-4. Johns would then take the third set and the match 6-0. It was still a good opening week for Bernard who went 5-1 with four of those wins coming against ranked opponents.

JJ Tracy continued his march through the consolation bracket with a pair of victories. He rolled past No. 30 Loris Pourroy of Florida State 6-2, 6-4 in the morning and then topped No. 39 Harris Walker of Harvard 7-6(3), 6-4 to advance to Saturday’s semifinals.

Cannon Kinglsey fell in the consolation round of 16 to Michigan State’s Ozan Baris.

October 6, 2022

Alexander Bernard claimed another impressive win on Thursday, besting no. 34 Axel Nefve 6-4, 2-6, 6-4. It was his fourth win over a ranked opponent this week. He now advances to the round of 16 on Friday to face another ranked foe in No. 28 Garrett Johns of Duke.

In consolation action, both Cannon Kingsley and JJ Tracy regained a bit of form as they rolled to easy straight-set victories. Kingsley took down No. 76 Lodewijk Weststrate of USC 6-2, 6-2 and Tracy defeated
Jonas Eriksson Ziverts of Arizona in similar fashion 6-2, 6-4.

The round of 16 and quarterfinal matches for both the main draw and consolation bracket will be contested on Friday.

October 5, 2022

Main draw singles opened on Wednesday and freshman qualifier Alexander Bernard continued his run. He fought back from down a set and down 5-3 in the second to comeback and top No. 13 Filip Planinsek of Alabama 3-6, 7-6 (10-8), 6-4. The second set tiebreak gave Bernard the momentum he needed in the third.

It was a tough day for Cannon Kingsley and JJ Tracy who both lost their opening round matches.

October 4, 2022

Freshman Alexander Bernard won a pair of singles qualifying matches on Tuesday over Top 100 ranked opponents to grab a spot in his first All-American Championship main draw. He dropped his first set of the tournament in his opening match against Wake Forest No. 80 Melios Efstathiou but then bounced-back to win the next two sets 6-3, 7-5. In the afternoon, he rolled past Duke’s No. 96 ranked Andrew Zhang 6-4, 7-5 to claim a qualifying spot. He will face No. 13 ranked Filip Planinsek of Alabama on Wednesday morning.

Justin Boulais dropped his third round qualifying match to No. 91 Nate Bonetto of Florida 6-3, 6-3. Buckeye freshman Jack Anthrop closed out the single portion of his tournament with a solid consolation win over Hawaii’s Guillaume Tattevin 6-4, 6-0.

In doubles, both teams of Bernard and Anthrop and Cannon Kingsley and JJ Tracy fell on Tuesday evening in their final qualifying matches.

October 3, 2022

Three Buckeyes were in action in singles qualifying on Monday. Freshman Alexander Bernard and junior Justin Boulais each won their opening round match while freshman Jack Anthrop fell in his match. Bernard was leading Old Dominion’s Younes Lalami 6-4, 3-2 when Lalami was forced to retire. Boulais rolled past Virginia Tech’s Jordan Chrysostom 6-4, 6-1. Both Bernard and Boulais will resume qualifying on Tuesday.

In doubles, the Buckeyes had a pair of teams in action, and both won a pair of matches in straight sets. Anthrop and Bernard beat a team from Florida State in the first round and then a pair from Virginia Tech in the second round. Cannon Kinglsey and JJ Tracy teamed for wins over teams from Arizona and LSU. Both teams will be looking to punch tickets to the main draw with wins on Tuesday.

Freshman Reece Yakubov started the week on Saturday in pre-qualifying and would drop his first match. But he rebounded with a solid win over SMU’s Alex Stafford on Sunday 7-6(1), 6-4.
