COLUMBUS, Ohio – Indiana took a 3-0 lead before Ohio State put up its only run of the game in the fourth inning and then the Hoosiers added more two runs in the seventh and five in the top of the ninth to hand the Buckeyes a 10-1 loss in the opening game of the series Friday night at Bill Davis Stadium. The loss by Ohio State was the fifth defeat in five Friday Big Ten games this season. The Buckeyes fell into 10th place in the Big Ten with a 4-10 record, while it is 20-15 overall.
Indiana, which improved to 22-18 overall and 5-12 in the Big Ten, jumped out to a 2-0 lead on a one-out home run by rightfielder Joe Kemp, who launched his eighth home run of the season over the fence in right field to also score Reggie Watson, who led off the game with an infield single. The Hoosiers added another run in the second inning to take a three-run lead. Josh Richardson reached on a one-out single to left and then scored with two outs on a single through the right side by Tyler Cox.
The Buckeyes scored their only run in the bottom of the fourth when Paul Farinacci (Sr., Westlake Village, Calif./Agoura) crossed the plate on a passed ball on Hoosier catcher Kurt Weigle. Farinacci doubled down the left-field line with two outs before a walk by Eric Fryer (Fr., Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Reynoldsburg) and a base hit by Matt Angle (Fr., Whitehall, Ohio/Whitehall-Yearling) loaded the bases before Weigle’s seventh passed ball of the season.
Indiana needed help from Ohio State to add two more runs in the seventh to build a 5-1 lead. OSU starter Dan DeLucia (So., Columbus, Ohio/Bishop Watterson) walked Cox to start the inning before Watson bunted down the first base line. Farinacci scooped the ball, turned a fired to Jason Zoeller (So., Verona, Pa./Shady Side Academy), the Buckeye second baseman who was covering a first, but the errant throw went into right field and Cox was able to advance to third. Kemp drove him in with a single through the left side. That base hit chase DeLucia out of the game and then with runners at first and third and facing his first batter, Rory Mesiter (Fr., Mansfield, Ohio/Mansfield Madison) was called for a balk trying to pick off Kemp at first and Watson scored to give the Hoosiers a four-run lead. Five more Indiana runs crossed the plate in the top of the ninth. OSU reliever Trey Fausnaugh (So., Circleville, Ohio/Westfall) walked two of his first three batters and the second Buckeye error of the game, loaded the bases. Ryan Parker singled to left to bring in the first run of the inning and kept the bases loaded before Fausnaugh was replaced by Brett Hatcher (Sr., Bellefontaine, Ohio/Bellefontaine). Hatcher walked his first batter before a wild pitch yielded another run. He then gave up a base hit up the middle by Corby Heckman that scored Parker. A second wild pitch plated the 10th Hoosier run of the game.
Watson finished 4-for-5 to lead Indiana, which out-hit the Buckeyes 11-6. Kemp finished 2-for-5 and drove in three RBI while scoring twice. Six different Buckeyes had one hit and defensively the team committed two errors.
DeLucia went 6.1 innings and gave up five runs (four earned) on nine hits. He did strike out seven batters and walked two in falling to 2-4 with the loss. Josh Lewis improved to 6-3 in going the first six innings before handing the game over to Joe Trucchio, who pitched the final three innings to earn his third save of the season. Lewis had seven strikeouts in allowing one unearned run on five hits. Trucchio struck out two and allowed only one hit.
Ohio State has scored only six runs and has never led in five Friday Big Ten games this season, matched by 37 runs by its opponents.
The teams will play a doubleheader Saturday at 4:05 p.m. before concluding the series with a single game on Sunday. All three games will be broadcast on www.wosu.org while the series finale will be broadcast on NPR 820 (WOSU-AM).
