COLUMBUS, Ohio – Senior linebacker and co-captain Joshua Perry, Ohio State’s second-leading tackler on the field and a socially conscience and proactive leader off, was today named a finalist for the 12th annual Lott IMPACT Trophy. The Club IMPACT Foundation of Newport Beach, Calif., presents the award in the name of Ronnie Lott to college football’s top defensive player who exemplifies the best in character and performance.
Perry’s impact has been evident throughout his career as a Buckeye and long before. Consider:
This champion among the team’s community service volunteers has a resume that includes countless service projects and work spent with Athletes in Action, Ohio State Buckeye Village, LifeCare Alliance, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Second & Seven Foundation, Nationwide Children’s Hospital, the Ohio State University Medical Center and the Veterans Administration Hospital, Peletonia and the Columbus City Schools Special Olympics.
On the field, Perry has played in 51 games and started 36 times. In 2014 he led the national champion Buckeyes with 124 tackles, second-most in the Big Ten, and he ranks second on the team this year with 98 tackles. He was named an all-Big Ten first-team linebacker by the league’s coaches earlier this week and he needs just nine tackles to become only the 16th Buckeye in school history to record at least 300.
His play on the field and his deeds off the field have combined to earn Perry numerous national accolades as a senior, including:
This year Perry was also on the watch lists for the Butkus Award and the Bednarik Award.
Founded in 2004, the Lott IMPACT Trophy is given to the player who exhibits the same characteristics Ronnie Lott embodied during his distinguished career: athletic ability as well as the character attributes of integrity, maturity, performance, academics, community and tenacity.
Perry and the other finalists – Jeremy Cash of Duke, Tyler Matakevich from Temple and Carl Nassib of Penn State – will travel to Newport Beach, Calif., this weekend for the Lott IMPACT Trophy Award Banquet, held at the Pacific Club. The award show will be televised live on Fox Sports at 7 p.m. PST and it will be hosted by Fox Sports’ Joel Klatt and Jenny Taft.
