Bloomington, Ind. – The Ohio State women’s basketball team opened its Big Ten season with a 64-52 loss Friday night at Indiana. Courtney Coleman (Jr., Cincinnati, Ohio/Hughes) led the Buckeyes with a double-double performance of 10 points and 10 rebounds but it wasn’t enough as the Hoosiers’ Jill Chapman dominated the paint with 16 points, 14 boards and four blocked shots.
The loss drops Ohio State’s overall record to 5-7, 0-1 in the league. Indiana improves to 7-5, 1-0.
The Buckeyes fought back from a 14-point deficit in the first half thanks in part to the three-point shooting of guard Lauren Shenk (Sr., Minster, Ohio/Minster). Shenk drilled two triples in a 12-2 rally to cut the lead to four, 27-23, with 5:39 to play. Ohio State trailed 33-27 at the half.
Ohio State’s momentum continued in the early minutes of the second half. The Hoosiers got on the scoreboard first, however the Buckeyes, with an 8-2 run, cut the lead to 37-35 with 15:24 remaining.
Indiana stepped up its intensity, posting 16 of the next 17 points, to build a 53-36 lead that would not be threatened again with 5:45 left on the clock.
Both teams struggled from the field, as the Buckeyes managed 30.5 percent (18-of-59) shooting, while the Hoosiers weren’t much better at 37.3 percent (22-of-59). Ohio State shut down the Indiana outside game, holding the Hoosiers to 0-for-14 shooting from behind the three-point arc.
The Buckeyes return to action Sunday afternoon, traveling to State College, Pa., for a 2 p.m. contest with No. 24 Penn State. The game will be televised nationally on ESPN2.
