COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State Buckeyes tied a season high with four home runs on their way to a 12-7 victory over the Wright State Raiders. The Buckeyes scored five runs in both the second and seventh innings to improve their record to 28-7 (11-1). Wright State fell to 18-16 (5-5) with the loss.
Marcello Garofalo (Jr., Columbus, OH) went 3-4 with a home run, two runs scored and four RBI to lead the Buckeyes. His three-run shot in the second inning put OSU up 3-1and give the Bucks the lead for good.
Wright State notched the first run of the game when Chris Ranstead scored on a ground out by Dusty Beam. Ranstead doubled to lead off the first inning and advanced to third on Scott Marshalls ground out before scoring on Beams ground ball to short.
The Buckeyes stormed back in the bottom of the second. Jason Driscoll (Jr., Middlefield, OH) and Doug Dendinger (Fr., Greenwich, OH) started the inning off with back-to-back walks. Garofalo then drilled a three-run home run, his second of the season. Joe Palazzo (Fr., Tuscon, AZ) followed with a single to center. With Palazzo on third and two outs Mike Check (So., Bay Village, OH) beat out an infield hit to knock in the Buckeyes fourth run of the inning. Check stole second and scored on a single to right by Jason Trott (Sr., Dublin, OH) to make the score 5-1 after two innings.
OSU added a run to its lead in the third. Driscoll led off with a bunt single and stole second on a pitch in the dirt. Dendinger then smoked a single to center to plate Driscoll and put the Bucks up 6-1.
The Raiders battled back in the fifth inning with two runs. A single by Matt Bruner came in between walks to Doug Nichols and Ranstead to load the bases with one out. Scott Marshall followed with a single to center to score Nichols. Beam then walked with the bases loaded to score Bruner and make the score 6-3.
WSU struck again in the seventh. Bruner reached on a single to start things off for the Raiders. Two outs later Beams two-run homer to left-center field cut the Buckeye lead to one. Three home runs and an RBI double, all with two outs, stretched the OSU lead to 11-5 after the seventh. Back-to-Back home runs by Chad Ehrnsberger (So., Kalida, OH) and Driscoll got things going for the Buckeyes. The homers were Ehrnsbergers 10th and Driscolls third on the season. Tom Durant (Sr., Columbus, OH) was then hit by a pitch. Garofalo followed by driving in his fourth run of the game with a double to right-center field. The third home run of the inning was a two-run shot by Palazzo, the first of his collegiate career.
The Buckeyes tacked on another run in the eighth to increase their lead to seven. Check beat out another infield hit with one out in the inning. Trott then singled to right and Check scored when the relay throw bounced away from the infield to make the score 12-5.
The Raiders led off the ninth with three consecutive singles. Brian Bautsch lifted a sacrifice fly to score Ranstead and move Marshall to third. Josh Hart then singled to score Marshall and finish the scoring.
Ohio States next game is on Friday April 23rd at 6:35 p.m. in the first game of a four-game weekend series with Penn State.
