GRAND FORKS, N.D. – The 10th-ranked Ohio State women’s hockey team defeated North Dakota by a score of 3-2 in overtime thanks to a game-winning goal by Jody Heywood with under :04 on the clock Friday at Ralph Engelstad Arena in Grand Forks, N.D. The win was Ohio State’s first overtime victory this season as the team improved to 15-10-4 overall and 10-9-4 in the WCHA. North Dakota moves to 3-24-2 with a 0-22-1 conference record.

At the end of regulation, the score remained tied at 2-2 sending the game into overtime – Ohio State’s fourth overtime session in the last eight games. With seconds remaining in the teams battled for the puck along the left boards. Heywood (Regina, Saskatchewan/Regina Cougars) came up with it and skating it toward the UND net, flicking in a wrist shot from the bottom of the left circle with :03.5 on the clock for the victory.

It was the first overtime win for the Buckeyes since an overtime victory Feb. 18, 2005 also at North Dakota. Ohio State is 1-1-4 in overtime games this season.

OSU built a 2-0 lead into the second period, but the Fighting Sioux battled back with a goal in the second and third periods.

The Buckeyes opened the scoring just :33 into the game for a quick 1-0 lead. Sophomore Morgan Marziali (St. Mary’s, Ontario/London Devilettes) passed the puck to junior Erin Keys (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall), who backhanded it in with a sweep from her knees. The goal increased Keys’ team-leading total to 17 while Marziali registered her ninth assist.

Ohio State upped its lead to 2-0 with a power play goal 12:23 of the second period. A trio of defenseman teamed up for the goal as Tessa Bonhomme (Sudbury, Ontario/Sudbury Lady Wolves) fired in a slap shot from the top of the right circle after passes from Amber Bowman (Innisfil, Ontario/Beatrice Jr. Aeros) and Lisa Chesson (Plainfield, Ill./Chicago Mission) along the perimeter. Bonhomme picked up her 13th goal of the year as Bowman and Chesson recorded their 26th and 19th assists, respectively.

Just over a minute later at 13:25, North Dakota cut the score to 2-1 on a goal by Christy Carlson from right in front of the OSU net. She was assisted by Christey Allen and Jodi Holland.

The Fighting Sioux knotted the game at 2-all 10:09 into the third period with a power play goal by Casie Hanson. She tucked the puck into the OSU goal during a scramble in front of the net with assists by Samantha Turner and Carlson.

Overall, OSU had a 29-22 advantage in shots. The Buckeyes were 1-of-3 on the power play while the Fighting Sioux were 1-of-5. Senior goaltender Erika Vanderveer (Bradford, Ontario/Mississauga Jr. Chiefs) had 20 saves to improve to 14-7-3. UND netminder Brittany Kirkham made 26 saves and is 3-23-2.

With her assist, Bowman increased her career point total to 96. She needs just four points to become the first Ohio State blueliner to reach the 100-point milestone and also take the top spot in career points by a defenseman.

Ohio State and North Dakota will conclude their season series with a 7:07 p.m. (CT) game Saturday at Engelstad Arena.
