COLUMBUS, Ohio – Liza Hernandez, a graduate student on the No. 19 Ohio State women’s lacrosse team, has been named co-Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week after leading the Buckeyes to a 15-12 win over then-No. 9 Michigan Sunday. Against the Wolverines, the New Albany, Ohio, native had a game-high six goals and seven points, along with 10 draw controls.
The six goals tied her career high, first set Feb. 10, 2019 vs. Detroit Mercy. It was her third career game with seven or more points; she had seven points March 3, 2019 vs. Niagara and 10 in the win over Detroit Mercy in 2019. Her 10 draw controls were also a career best, passing the eight she had vs. Marquette in 2020.
Against the Wolverines, Hernandez opened the scoring and had completed her hat trick by the 14:01 mark of the game, adding a fourth goal as Ohio State led 9-7 at halftime. She had two of the Buckeyes’ final three goals, helping close out the win, and also had an assist in the second half.
Hernandez, a New Albany High School graduate, hit the 100 goal mark Feb. 14 at Northwestern and now has 109 as a Buckeye, adding 48 assists for 157 career points. She leads the 2021 squad with 10 goals and 11 points.
Ohio State travels for two Big Ten games at Rutgers this weekend. The teams will meet at 3 p.m. Friday and at noon Sunday in Piscataway, N.J., with both games streamed through BTN Plus.
