Ohio State returns just two RB lettermen, but the duo combined for 1,756 rush yards and 22 TDs

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State has a 2022 running back room featuring six players, led by a pair of young rushers – true sophomore TreVeyon Henderson and third-year sophomore Miyan Williams – who combined for 1,756 rushing yards and 22 total touchdowns in 2021. They also combined to catch 38 passes out of the backfield.

A third back from 2021 – Evan Pryor – redshirted the season after playing in four games and rushing for 98 yards.

The unit is under the direction of Tony Alford, who is in his eighth season as coach of Ohio State’s running backs. Ohio State led the Big Ten in 2021 and was third nationally in yards per carry (5.54). The team’s 180.6 yards per game average was 47th nationally and fifth in the Big Ten.

6 1,000-Yard Rushers
Alford’s running backs have been nothing short of productive, tough and reliable and include six 1,000-yard seasons: Ezekiel Elliott (2015), Mike Weber (2016), J.K. Dobbins (2017, 2018 and 2019) and TreVeyon Henderson (2021). The only season Ohio State didn’t have a 1,000-yard rusher under Alford was the pandemic-shortened 2020 season.

A fourth scholarship player in the unit is true freshman Dallan Hayden, who joined the team in June with nine other members of his 2022 recruiting class. Hayden was twice named the Division II-AAA Mr. Football Award winner in Tennessee and amassed 4,012 rushing yards and 57 TDs in his final two seasons as a prepster.

The unit competing in fall camp drills also features second-year performer Cayden Saunders and first-year Buckeye T.C. Caffey.

Some notes on Ohio State’s three veteran RBs:

#32 – TreVeyon Henderson
Henderson is coming off a terrific Freshman All-America (ESPN, The Athletic, 247Sports and Pro Football Focus) season in 2021 when he rushed for 1,248 yards and scored 19 total touchdowns … his rushing total is second-most in school history for a freshman and his 19 TDs rank first among Ohio State freshmen and eighth among all players … he rushed for an Ohio State freshman record 270 yards vs. Tulsa …tied for first nationally with four rushes of at least 50 yards … also had 100-yard games vs. Maryland (102) and Penn State (152).

#21 – Evan Pryor
Pryor is in his second season with the program and has four seasons of eligibility after red-shirting the 2021 season … he did play in four games last season and totaled 98 yards off 21 carries for a 4.7 yards-per-carry average … scored a touchdown in his first collegiate game, a 12-yard rush vs. Akron.

#3 – Miyan Williams
Williams is in his third year with the program and has three seasons of eligibility … he rushed for 508 yards in 2021 and averaged a team-best 7.2 yards per carry … has two 100-yard games: in the season opener last year vs. Minnesota he gained 125 yards off just nine carries, including a career-long 71-yard touchdown run; he also had 117 yards against Purdue last season.
