COLUMBUS, Ohio – Senior Malik Heinselman, ranked No. 9 in the most recent InterMat ratings at 125 pounds, was named the Big Ten Wrestler of the Week Tuesday.
Heinselman (6-0) knocked off No. 12 Sam Latona of Virginia Tech, a returning 2021 All-American, last Friday as the No. 8 Buckeyes defeated the No. 10 Hokies 17-13 in Blacksburg, Virginia.
In the opening bout vs. the Hokies, neither wrestler was able to score until Heinselman, a three-time NCAA qualifier (2019, 2020, 2021), earned an escape to start the second period for the 1-0 lead. Latona tied it at 1-all with an escape to start the third. Heinselman earned the first takedown of the night with 40 seconds left and then added another after a Latona escape to win by decision, 5-2.
