COLUMBUS, Ohio — Nick Myers, who has led the Ohio State men’s lacrosse program to unprecedented heights in his nine seasons as head coach, has signed a five-year contract extension, Janine Oman, Senior Associate Athletic Director, Student Services and Sport Administration and Senior Women’s Administrator, announced today.
“We are excited to extend Coach Myers’ contract here at Ohio State,” said Oman. “His focus on student athlete development in all facets of their life is an exemplar for others to follow. He has made a tremendous impact on the Ohio State lacrosse program, but, more importantly, the young men he mentors during their time at Ohio State.”
Since taking over the program in 2008, Myers has posted an 85-63 record while three times taking the Buckeyes to the NCAA Quarterfinals. In 2017, his team broke through and advanced to the program’s first-ever Final Four, where it won its national semifinal game against Towson and played on the sport’s biggest stage in the national championship game. Myers’ 2017 squad set a program record by winning 16 games and also produced six All-Americans, including the defenseman Ben Randall, the first Buckeye in program history to be a first-teamer.
“I’m grateful to Gene Smith and Janine Oman for allowing me to lead a program that I love at a university that I love,” said Myers. “This is a special place and I am fortunate to be in a position to impact lives on a daily basis. My staff and I will continue to work tirelessly to win championships, produce men of high character and be a program that everyone can be proud of.”
Myers’ teams have also excelled off the field. Under his tutelage, members of the program have earned 149 Academic All-Big Ten accolades and 213 Ohio State Scholar-Athlete nods, along with the first 12 USILA Scholar All-American selections in program history. The team’s community service numbers rise each year, with the program volunteering more than 2,300 hours in the community the last five seasons combined.
In 2015, Myers helped the Buckeyes usher in a new era, as the Big Ten Conference sponsored men’s lacrosse for the first time. Ohio State, which ended the year 12-7 overall (3-2 B1G), advanced to the inaugural Big Ten Tournament championship game and earned an at-large spot in the NCAA Tournament. In the first round of the NCAA tourney, the Buckeyes went on the road and defeated two-time defending champion Duke.
Two years prior, in 2013, Myers’ Buckeyes posted a 13-4 record, won the ECAC Tournament title and were the No. 3 seed in the NCAA Tournament. They topped Towson in the opening round and advanced to the NCAA Quarterfinals for the second time in school history.
A Buckeye through and through, Myers came to Ohio State is 2002 as a volunteer assistant coach and was on the Buckeye staff when the squad earned a spot in the NCAA tournament in 2003, the first appearance in program history, and shared the GWLL title. After spending two season at Butler (2004, 2005), he rejoined the staff in 2006 as Ohio State’s top assistant coach and was named the program’s head coach in July of 2008.
