COLUMBUS, Ohio – Six Buckeye men’s volleyball student-athletes received their Ohio State letter jackets recently. The half dozen letterwinners pictured above are from left to right: Kyle Skinner, Ethan Talley, Luke Lentin, Austin Gerwig, Jack Stevens, Parker Mikesch (and head coach Kevin Burch). Four were freshmen in 2019 while the other two were new Buckeyes after transferring in prior to the ’19 campaign.
AUSTIN GERWIG | Middle Blocker | 6-6 | Doylestown, Ohio
Gerwig played in 18 matches making 13 starts as a sophomore last season, his first in Columbus after transferring from Purdue Fort Wayne. The Buckeye State native produced 45 kills, 27 blocks, eight digs and a pair of aces. He was responsible for the finishing touches against his old squad, putting up a block and subsequent kill to clinch a 15-9 fifth-set win over the Mastodons.
LUKE LENTIN | Setter | 6-3 | Sophomore | La Jolla, Calif.
Lentin played in 11 matches and made four starts as a true freshman. He totaled 176 assists, 23 digs, eight aces, two kills and a block. Lentin dished out 57 assists in a four-setter versus McKendree (March 3), steering the offense to a .391 team hitting percentage and the victory. He flashed at the baseline as well, ripping four aces in a three-set sweep at Lindenwood.
PARKER MIKESCH | Libero | 5-11 | Sophomore | Xenia, Ohio
Mikesch saw the floor in 28 matches as a true freshman and even stepped in as the starting setter for eight matches. He ranked second on the team with 259 assists while adding 51 digs, 10 blocks, seven kills and three aces to his season stat line. Mikesch distributed 53 assists in a four-set win over Lincoln Memorial, guiding the offense to a .328 team hitting percentage.
KYLE SKINNER | Outside Hitter | 6-4 | Senior | Santa Barbara, Calif.
Skinner made the cross-country trek from California to become a Buckeye for his final two seasons and made an immediate impact with five starts in 2019. He registered 47 kills, 34 digs, eight blocks and four aces in 14 matches played.
JACK STEVENS | Outside Hitter | 6-4 | Sophomore | Libertyville, Ill.
Stevens was one of only three Buckeyes to see action in all 29 matches during the 2019 season. The true freshman made five starts and produced 34 kills, 22 digs, six aces and three blocks. He also owned the team’s highest serve-receive percentage (.942), committing just six errors on 104 attempts.
ETHAN TALLEY | Middle Blocker | 6-7 | Sophomore | Newport Beach, Calif.
Talley was in the starting lineup for 15 of 17 matches played, posting a season hitting percentage of .518 with 70 kills on 112 attempts and 12 errors. He added 25 blocks, nine digs and four aces. Talley became the fifth Buckeye in school history to finish a match hitting 1.000 (min. 10 attempts) when he bounced all 10 swings vs. McKendree on March 1.
