COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State rowing team has proved its commitment to volunteering time and time again. This past Martin Luther King, Jr., holiday was no exception. Fifteen Buckeye rowers agreed to lend a hand to Habitat for Humanity of the greater Columbus area.

AmeriCorps VISTA Community Resource Coordinator, Katie Ramunni, enjoyed interacting with the team.

“I had fun working with the girls because the projects they were assigned to were pretty challenging,” Ramunni said. “Their team dynamics were very resourceful and integral to their successful completion of each assignment they worked on.”

The rowers were divided into small groups and given projects to accomplish. Senior captain Katie Flarida was reminded how important it is to work together as a team.
“This volunteer work was a great team builder for all of us who went,” Flarida said. “We had to rebuild large metal stands and organize heavy doors and windows. In order for us to be productive, we had to work together and communicate. It amazes me how fast tasks can be accomplished when everyone works together.”
Fellow captain Sara Wallace was equally excited to offer her efforts for a good cause.
“Volunteering for Habitat for Humanity was a great experience not only for me personally, but also for the team as a whole,” Wallace said. “It was an excellent opportunity to get to work together, have fun, and more importantly give back to the community that has been so supportive of Ohio State.”
According to Ramunni, the net proceeds from every sold item cover 100 percent of the affiliate’s administrative costs. In 2009, the affiliate was able to use $150,000,000 in additional net proceeds to put towards funding for homes in Franklin County.
“I enjoy working with my teammates because it makes the time go by faster and hard work is more enjoyable when you are in good company,” Flarida said. “Even though we weren’t directly helping someone, it was nice to know that in the end we could be indirectly changing someone’s life.”
Other Ohio State team helpers included: Katie Coons, Mandy Merritt, Ellen Heister, Claudia Schiwy, Caroline McPherson, Farrah Edwards, Ulrike Denker, Ingrid Aasaaren, Ashley Dzurnak, Emily Walsh, Emily Ralph, Tess Prescott and Stephanie Johnson.
