Boston, Mass. – Major League Lacrosse, the premier professional outdoor lacrosse league, announced Tuesday that Rochester Rattlers defenseman Greg Bice has been named as the 2011 New Balance MLL Sportsman of the Year, according to MLL Commissioner David Gross. Players are nominated for this honor by the coaches and general managers of the six MLL teams and the finalists are presented to New Balance for consideration.
The New Balance MLL Sportsman of the Year was created in 2004 and recognizes a player who has consistently demonstrated sportsmanship through tenacity, determination, and fair play on the field over the course of the regular season. In addition, The Sportsman of the Year should also be an individual involved in off-field charity work, which not only promotes the sport of lacrosse, but also helps youth players understand the importance of sportsmanship and team play.
Bice, who won the award for the second time in his career, has been involved with supporting an orphanage in Honduras along with his wife, Emily. Bice has spent time teaching at the orphanage and has provided support with the Joshua Gregory Bice Memorial Fund, which is named after Bice’s late son.
“It’s a great honor to receive this award, especially amongst so many players who give back to their communities and are involved with many worthy causes,” Bice said. “I would like to thank the MLL, New Balance and the lacrosse community for their generous support of Lacrosse the Nations (www.lacrossethenations.org) and our son Joshua’s memorial fund (www.agcltd.org).”
Bice serves on the Board of Directors for the Lacrosse The Nations Foundation, which tries to unify the lacrosse community to sustainably improve education and health while creating hope and opportunity for children in need.
“Greg is one of the best leaders I have been around in my playing and coaching career,” says Rattlers Vice President David Cieslinski. “He leads by example, hard work and always plays by the rules and with great class.
“Greg is a very spiritual and generous soul who truly cares and tries to make a difference for children in need around the world,” Cieslinski adds. “His passion to help others is not something that we come across everyday in the lacrosse community.”
On the field, Bice appeared in 11 games for the Rattlers this season and recorded 25 ground balls, which ranked fourth on the team. He also scored a goal with an assist and had 11 shots. He tallied a season-high five ground balls against Boston on June 18 and had a goal in the season opener against Chesapeake on May 14.
Bice also earned the New Balance Sportsman of the Year award in 2007 as a member of the Los Angeles Riptide.
