Gray Wins Series Opener 6-5

Team Gray opened the Scarlet and Gray Fall Series on Friday night with a 6-5 win behind a pair of homers at the plate and 14 strikeouts by it’s pitchers.

It was certainly a tale of two games. Both offenses started hot, hitting four homers in the first two innings and putting up a combined nine runs. But then the pitchers settled in. Both team’s hurlers allowed no hits over the final four innings and combined to strikeout 15 batters.

Archer Brookman had a pair of hits for the Gray side as his triple in the third inning put Gray ahead 6-5 and that would be the final runs of the game. That also turned out to be the final hit in the game for Gray, but its pitchers made the lead stand. Tim Baird came in for starter Will Pfennig in the fourth and went 1.1 innings of hitless relief, striking out two. Then it was the Ethan Hammerberg show. The junior from Upper Arlington struck out all six batters he faced to shut the door and earn the save.

Mitchell Okuley collected a pair of hits for Scarlet and also scored a run. Colton Bauer and Kade Kern hit homers in the first inning to help stake Scarlet to a 4-0 lead. Gray answered in the top of the second as freshman Trey Lipsey hit a three-run blast to center and then Zach Dezenzo took the very next pitch out to right-center to tie the game.

Scarlet retook the lead in the bottom of the second as Nate Karaffa doubled and Okuley followed with an RBI single. Freshman Tyler Pettorini had a two-out single in the third but that was the final hit of the night for the Scarlet side.

The two teams will resume the series on Saturday afternoon. First pitch is schedule for 3 p.m.
