COLUMBUS, Ohio – In an intrasquad exhibition between members of the Ohio State men’s swimming program, Team Gray ended the meet with a 146-116 victory over the Scarlet Friday evening at McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion. The Gray held off a late effort from the Scarlet, winning eight events in the process.

The relay contingent of Steven Zimmerman, DJ MacDonald, Garrett Trebilcock and Josh Fleagle started the Gray off with a first-place touch in the 200 medley relay. Scarlet took the runner-up spot in the event behind swims from Ryan Bubb, Keanu Stevenson, Matt McHugh and Michael DiSalle.

Senior standout Alex Miller nabbed the next event for the Gray, placing first in the 1000 freestyle. In the 200 freestyle, Gray once again edged out Team Scarlet with a first-place finish from Fleagle.

Moving onto the 100 backstroke, Zimmerman, a junior from Morrow, Ohio, continued the Gray dominance with his first individual win of the meet. Macdonald followed it up with a victory of his own in the 100 breaststroke.

Team Scarlet claimed its first win of the evening with a first-place showing in the 200 butterfly from junior Tamas Gercsak. DiSalle followed it up with another win for the squad in the 50 freestyle.

The Gray rebounded with a first-place performance from Fleagle in the 100 freestyle. Zimmerman then completed a sweep of the backstroke events with a win in 200 backstroke event.

MacDonald tallied his second victory of the evening for the Gray in the 200 breaststroke, before Miller also notched his second win for Team Gray in the 500 freestyle.

However, the Scarlet didn’t go down without a fight. The team finished one, two in the 100 butterfly behind performances from freshman Matt McHugh and Bubb, a senior this season. Gercsak then picked up his second win of the meet, this time in the 200 individual medley.

The crowd of Buckeye supporters really got into the last race of the evening, the 400 freestyle relay. In a close race, the young Scarlet team of DiSalle, Mark Belanger, Steffen Hillmer and McHugh was able to finish strong, edging out the Gray in the final links.

Tomorrow the men’s swimming program will return to McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion for the Alumni vs. Varsity showcase. Warm-ups are slated for a 10:30 a.m. start time, with competition following at 11 a.m.

Next on the competitive agenda, Ohio State will welcome in-state Division III powerhouse Kenyon College in a co-ed dual alongside the Ohio State women’s program Oct. 25.
