COLUMBUS, Ohio – Layton Ahac, who will be a freshman for the Ohio State men’s hockey team in the fall, was selected by the Vegas Golden Knights in the third round of the 2019 NHL Entry Draft, No. 86 overall.

“It’s surreal,” Ahac said of hearing his name called. “So many emotions running through my mind. It was instant joy and excitement. I’m super excited for the future.”

Ahac, a defenseman from North Vancouver, British Columbia, spent the last two years with the Prince George Spruce Kings in the British Columbia Hockey League. He was ranked 62nd in the final rankings of North American skaters by NHL Central Scouting after an outstanding second of the season, including a postseason run that culminated in a BCHL championship.

Ahac is looking forward to starting his collegiate career with the Buckeyes.

“They have a great program and a winning culture. They also develop their players. With team success comes individual success and I’m super excited to get going there.”

In 2018-19 Ahac had 32 points, with four goals and 28 assists in 53 regular season games and earned Second Team All-BCHL accolades as well as was a finalist for BCHL Defenseman of the Year honors. He averaged a point per game through 17 postseason contests (5g, 12a), with the squad winning the BCHL championship with a 16-1 record and claiming the Doyle Cup. He was a BCHL All-Rookie Team selection after scoring 28 points (6g, 22a) in 57 regular season games in 2017-18. Ahac played for Canada West at the World Junior A Challenge.

“So much hard work,” Ahac said of what it took to rise to a third-round draft pick. “I’m passionate about this and want to make this a career and make a living from this game. Every single day I came to the rink or the gym with that attitude. It’s paid off so far, but the work doesn’t stop.”

All-time, 53 Buckeyes have been selected in the NHL Entry Draft, with three first round picks (RJ Umberger/No. 16 in 2001, Ryan Kesler/No. 23 in 2003, David Steckel/No. 30 in 2001). Other Buckeye draft picks on the 2019-20 squad include Miguel Fidler (Florida), Tanner Laczynski (Philadelphia), Carson Meyer (Columbus) and Ryan O’Connell (Toronto).
