Abby Fesl, a member of the 2016 women’s volleyball team and recent Master’s degree graduate in early August, is tracking down the program’s newcomers in a feature series titled Gettin’ Gabby With Abby. This edition focuses on junior transfer Jasmine Koonts.

Jasmine Koonts Fits into the Buckeye Puzzle

Junior transfer Jasmine Koonts flew halfway across the country during the spring semester to visit Ohio State after deciding that Arizona State University was no longer her perfect fit. Koonts was immediately sold on everything from the coaching, to the outgoing team, to playing in a very challenging Big Ten Conference.

“I like how everyone is so different, but fit like a puzzle,” Koonts said. The Houston, Texas native played a pivotal role for the Sun Devils during her freshman and sophomore seasons. Koonts competed in 92 total sets her sophomore year where she recorded 151 kills on the season and netted 81 total blocks, the second highest on the roster.

Playing in the Pac-12 Conference allowed Koonts to be in a competitive environment day in and day out. She competed at schools such as Oregon, USC and UCLA, but enjoyed facing Washington the most.

“Washington was my favorite gym I’ve played in. The crowd was crazy, it really fired me up.”

Bringing her west coast flair to the gym will help the Buckeyes during the 2017 campaign. “I think seeing how the playing style is different will be fun,” Koonts said.

While at ASU, she was also actively involved in other organizations. As a sophomore she and five other athletes visited the Havasupai Indian Reservation at Grand Canyon National Park to help clean a school and provide services. She was also on the Student Athlete Advisory Committee and a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

Koonts will pursue a degree in Sport Industry, with hopes of one day working in Marketing for Nike or Adidas.

Koonts’ parents, Carol and Derek Koonts, ran track for Texas Tech and Sam Houston, respectively. They now live in Texas, with her younger sister Kathryn.
