COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State Buckeyes opened their 17th season of women’s soccer with a 2-0 win over Bowling Green Friday before 847 fans at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. Here’s what transpired.
9:23 – And the unselfish play by the Buckeyes continue. Danielle Scoliere had every opportunity to keep the ball and try and get deeper into the box but she saw Lauren Steuer, hit her with a great pass, and Steuer drilled another ball on net…Alexa Arsenault’s seventh save of the game.
15:51 – The Buckeyes just keep applying pressure and it pays off: Kayla Eckman scores off assists from Cassie Dickerson and Caitlyn Martin.
16:44 – Kayla Eckman is robbed by Alexa Arsenault, a leading candidate for player of the game.
23:18 – Paige Maxwell again from the left side that Alexa Arsenault slams away.
24:50 – As pretty a sequence of passes as one will see this early by the Buckeyes; Paige Mzaxwell passing to her left to Lauren Steuer in the box who unselfishly tried to connect with Lauren Granberg deep in the box.
30:00 – Freshman Ally Walker makes her first appearance on the field in a Buckeye uniform. That makes six true freshman seeing action tonight.
39:19 – Just realized that it is a terrific night for a college soccer game. Absolutely terrific. And it appears as if the free admission is a very desirable price for the fans. No word yet on the crowd, but it appears to be in the 600-700 range. Not bad for a late summer game with no students in town.
44:14 of Second Half – Tiffany Cameron dribbles to the left of the BGSU goal and parallel with it and sends a cross into the box that Paige Maxwell heads wide right.
Halftime – Ohio State leads, 1-0, on Paige Maxwell’s goal. The Buckeyes outshot BGSU, 11-0 in the half.
4:39 – Gooooooooooaaaaaaaaaaaaaalllllllllll Buckeyes!!!!!! Danielle Scoliere, moving down the right side just outside the box, sends a pass into Paige Maxwell, who was camping out in front of the goal, and Maxwell buried the ball into the far left corner for a 1-0 Ohio State lead. The goal was Maxwell’s ninth of her career.
About 12:00 – Liz Sullivan replaces Lauren Beachy and Kendyl Reed replaces Tiffany Cameron.
13:55 – Whoa…Lauren Steuer dribbled in alone from the left side but at a sever angle. She attempted a left-footed scoot of a cross that BG GK Aresnault made a diving deflection that probably saved a goal because Ashley Bowyer and Tiffany Cameron were lurking in front of the goal.
18:37 – Here’s some live stats: Ohio State leads in shots, 9-0, and in shots on goal, 3-0. Lauren Granberg leads with three shots. Lauren Steuer leads with two on goal.
20:33 – First Buckeye subs of the season: freshmen Karin Sendel replaces Courtney Jenkins; freshman Kayla Eckman replaces Caitlyn Martin; Paige Maxwell replaces Lauren Granberg.
24:30 – Cassie Dickerson’s lovely pass to Lauren Steuer inside the box on the left side resulted in another point-blank range shot by the Buckeyes and a huge save by BG’s Alexa Arsenault
31:55 – Lauren Granberg has the first great scoring opportunity of the year, sending a shot wide left from about 12-yards out. Moments later Granberg shot wide left from in close. The ball was blocked, though and Cassie Dickerson headed Lauren Beachy’s corner kick over the goal.
42:00 – Caitlyn Martin fires a 20-foot shot for the first shot of the game and season for Ohio State.
45:00 – Ohio State had the first touch of the game. The Buckeyes are sporting all white uniforms with scarlet numbers that are trimmed in black. The all-white look is accentuated by all white socks. Bowling Green is in orange tops with white shorts and orange socks.
Ohio State started a 4-4-2 lineup with senior captain Taz Robertson starting in goal. In front of her were defenders Lauren Beachy, Colleen Brady, junior captain Cassie Dickerson and Danielle Scoliere. The midfield included senior captain Ashley Bowyer, Courtney Jenkins, Lauren Steuer and Tiffany Cameron. Up front are Caitlyn Martin and Lauren Granberg. Cameron and Granberg are each true freshmen.
