Shiori Fukuda, a rising junior on the Ohio State women’s tennis team, captured her first tournament title last weekend, winning the 15K Vitro ITF Gimcheon Tournament in Gimcheon, Korea.
In her first match in the Round of 32, Fukuda overcame losing her first set to defeat Yu Jin Ahn of Korea, 3-6, 6-1, 6-1. She won her next three matches in straight sets, topping Korea’s Hyojung Yea (7-6 (2), 6-2) in the Round of 16, Denmark’s Olga Helmi (7-5, 6-4) in the quarterfinals and Korea’s So-Ra Lee (6-4, 6-1) in the semifinals.
In the final against Korea’s Sunam Jeong, Fukuda won the first set, 6-2, but lost the second, 4-6. Fukuda prevailed in the third set, 7-5, for the trophy.
Fukuda is a two-time First Team All-Big Ten selection and was the 2018 ITA Midwest Region Rookie of the Year and Big Ten Freshman of the Year. A communication major, she is a two-time Ohio State Scholar-Athlete and an Academic All-Big Ten selection. She was 24-12 in singles in 2018-19 overall, going 18-7 in dual matches. In doubles, Fukuda was 20-14 overall. She was ranked in both singles and doubles throughout most of the year.
